OK, my 3 1/2 mth old is getting a top tooth in. I know it isn't normal for a baby that young to get a tooth in, and I also know it isn't common for their first tooth to be a top tooth. I don't know what to do. Her doctor said not to give her oragel b/c shes too young. I've given her infant tylenol twice today. I don't want to keep giving that to her becasue it makes her sleepy. any suggestions here.

What can I do next?

Discovery Toys has (had?) (Super Nubby teething toy or something like that name.) a great teething toy when my son was little. It was solid, or almost solid, had a good handle that we both could grip, and was chillable. It almost looked like a dog toy. My son liked to bite, usually me, so I tried all sorts of things. This one is not cutesie, but worked well until he was more than two years old. Good luck! Before you know it you will be asking questions about wiggley teeth and the tooth fairy!

Hyland's Teething Tablets work very well. My 15 month old daughter already has 16 teeth, and she cut her first 2 at 3 months old. The only thing, besides drugging her with Tylenol all the time, that I found that worked was the Hyland's Teething Tablets. I researched the ingredients in it and asked several pharmacists and doctors for opinions and felt it was my best option. Also, if you wet the end of a wash cloth and put a rubber band between the wet and dry part and then freeze it, it makes a great "chew toy" that is also soothing!

Good luck!

My son was the same way, it makes her sleepy because she is in pain and it releives her pain. I suggest homeopathic teething tablets (you can buy them at walmart and they are very safe). and if a fever comes with it switch back and forth between your baby tylenol and baby motrin. I liked the motrin better because it lasts for 6 hours rather than tylenols 4. hope this helps and blessings to you and your family.

hey L.!
i'm sorry to hear about your little one. it is so hard to watch our children hurt.
i don't have specific advice for you, but i do find alot of success by going the homeopathic route. check your phone book for a natural food store or something of that nature. whole foods and earth fare are two very large chains. the people there are extremely helpful. currently we have some homeopathy for our child that seems to help alot. they are these little pellets that we dissolve in water...anyway, they aren't drugs so that helps.
good luck

My son loved it when I would stick a wet washcloth in the freezer (I would roll it up in the shape of a hotdog). Then he would hold it and chew on it.

My daughter got her first tooth on the top too. But I used baby oragel and it didn't seem to affect her. But you can always use the teething ring thats you freeze. Cold will numb the gum and the bumps on them massage the gums. You can find them at Wal-mart.
Hope this helps

I always heard that there are even some babies born with teeth. I know that sounds strange but it's true.

My son and grandson both cut teeth at 4 mos and I took a baby washcloth and rinsed it out several times (making sure to get any traces of soap out) then I put ice chips in it and put a rubber band around that part and let them gum on that bubble part...you have to hold it for them at that age anyway. Also the middle section of Mom's index finger(between 1st and 2nd joint) fits perfectly in there. :D

My son had problems with his teeth coming in also and his mouth was very sore. I bought this thing at toys r us. It is a little net that has a handle that screws onto it so that the baby can hold it. My sons Dr. told us to fill it with seedless grapes . He loved it and it is good for the child rather than medication. Plus if you freeze the grapes just a little it makes it cold in her mouth plus it is fruit.

GOOD LUCK!

My son got his first tooth on the top @ 3 months. I used orajel and it was fine. The swabs are great that little so you don't have to use to much.

I would throw his pacifier in the freezer for just a little bit and let it get good and cold, then give it to him. HE LOVED IT!!!!!! The teething tablets are ok too.

Infants Motrin works great for the inflammed gums! Tylenol isn't probably making her sleepy...it's just that she's getting a little relief and can finally fall asleep half way in peace. It won't hurt to keep giving to her for a little while.

Good Luck

My son had his first tooth at 4 mos and almost a full mouth of teeth by 8 mos. I was told to never use orajel at any age. However, I shopped at a place called Mothers Market in CA (organic, whole foods, homeopathic remedies etc) and they recommended a teething gel by Hylands. It is all natual and works really well. I can usually find it a Walgreens. Hylands also make a teething tablet that didn't work at all on my first son, but worked great with the 2nd one!! Hope this helps

I don't really have any good advice for you for her pain, but my nephew teethed really early like that too. We just had to give him tylenol and lots of love. It was tough, but he's 16 yrs old now. So we all survived it. :) Hang in there.

Try calling your doctor and ask them what their suggestions are. Also try a teething ring that u put in the freezer or refrigerator. My son liked those when was teething.

L.,
good luck, I feel for you! I always have found infant/childrens advil works better for pain and fevers than tylenol. Maybe just use it at nap and bed time so she can be well rested. There are some great "cooly" type things at Target. Hang in there!

Both of our girls started teething at 3-4mos, and both of them had top teeth break through. We always gave them Baby Orajel to help with the discomfort, and it seemed to do the trick. As for the teeth, they never stayed. I guess it was because they were still so young, but the teeth (and there were about 2-4 that had broke through a little) all went back underneath the gums and didn't come out again for several several months.

My two older boys did the same thing. The oldest one preferred chewing on his fingers and an icy teething ring. My middle boy preferred the harder side of his pacifier. I'd stock up on teething rings and things that she could gnaw on.

I also had a burp cloth type thing that has 4 firm rubber corners with different colors and textures embossed into it. The younger two loved that. I think I found it at Reasor's. Babies R Us does't show on on line the stuff they show would be great though. There's a picture of one at this ebay auction place: (I have no affiliation with the seller) http://cgi.ebay.com/NWT-2-Sassy-Teething-Bibs-and-1-Teeth...

I checked the walmar, walgreen's and target websites and don't see anything like it but Target has some toys that would work.

Skip the tylenol if you can. Use it only at nap times and bed time, This is the time to get her on a good sleep/eating schedule. Move up to a firmer nipple on the bottle can help too.

Don't be surprised if she cuts one a month for the next year. Some kids do. Runny noses, sore throats and ear infections always accompanied my boys teeth.
