My 2Yr Old's Tummy Problems Are Making Me a Nervous Wreck.

My son was a healthy baby, it was honestly amazing how healthy the boy was. He started having tummy problems...he'd had the occasional constipation but that's babies we tried prune juice but we had to be careful because out of nowhere he'd be just fine. It's been almost a year and the past few months he's been having regular BM's then all of the sudden in a two day period he'll have such hard poops that there's blood in the diaper. I've tried to force feed him the laxitive from the doc. he spits it in my face. I've tried miralax...I haven't seen results yet. Now he's not drinking enough and being so fussy I'm starting to worry. He's clingy and upset and I feel so bad that I can't make him happy or feel better. A good day is two crying episodes...lol. I'm just at a loss for ideas. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Miralax is not a laxative so does not work after 1 dose overnight like others , it is a softner and helps to keep the BM's regular and at a normal texture , so it would need to be given everyday , or every other day at least , also finding the right dosage for your child can be tricky , my son used to need it on a regular basis but has now outgrown the need for it. If you give your child Miralax every day after 2-3 days you will see a BM , also like others have said keep dairy at a minimum and this causes constipation and try and get him to eat fruits like grapes , strawberries , clementines and plums rather than binding fruits such as banana.

My baby's 3 1/2 &has had severe const. probs for about 1&1/2 yrs on & off... Miralax is what all the Dr's keep telling us to
use, but its like he either has the runs or is affraid to poopy bc he's
affraid it will hurt! Its gotten to the point where he know has a
lazeration in his rectom(from the hard poopy And strainin...g) And we had
x-rays done this past Sat. & they showed his upper intestence are
full, lower was ok bc he passed a bowel movement that morning, but we
need to have him "cleaned out". I know the Miralax helps him to go, but
is it "cleaning him out?"

I have scheduled an appt w/a Gastrololgist thro Childrens Hosp so he can be thouroghly examinded!
Unfortunately that appt. isnt til 10-14,2010.& today's 9-27! I know 2 feed him a high fiber diet & 2 cut back on milk
& cheese.. but any1 w/a tipical 3yr old knows its hard 2 get
them 2 eat/drink everything they u want them 2 or r suppose 2!
I would ♥ 2 stay updated w/ u & share advice(through r experiece & Trial & Error!!) that could possibly help us get our babies through this so they can stop suffering! >I just dont know if Miralax is really "cleaning him out" Ya know what I mean? Yes,it keeps him from passing hard, painful poopy- but is that 'really healthy'2 give it 2 him so much & so often?I would ♥2 share any advice &experiences w/u & hear urs & c if maybe we could help each other get r babies through this!
Also been givin genaric PediSure 4 toodlers W/Added Fiber! Also Taking a daily probiotic helps also.I would so appreciate2 K.I.T. w/mothers n similar situations! Here's my email: ____@____.com OR contact me on FB. ♥♥

My healthy 2 year old goes through this too. She'll be fine for a while then she won't poop for a week and have it be a baseball sized hard poo that makes her bleed. So sad. We started giving her miralax every day whether or not she was backed up. It can take a couple of weeks to completely clear out. And yes, as another poster put, cut back the dairy and increase fiber and fruits and limit bananas as well (a hard one here, she loves them).

I give my kids chopped dates. They come in a box already chopped. The kids love them and it seems to loosen things. My niece had issues with this when she was a toddler and the dr. said to cut down on dairy.

My daughter is 3.5 and she's always struggled with constipation. We've tried a combination of things and after lots and lots of trial & error, we've found what works best for us. She gets a fruit at every single meal. We switched to whole grain bread, lots and lots and lots of water, very little dairy & 1/2 capful of Miralax every day in 8 ozs of juice. If she gets backed up (going 1 day with out pooping) she gets 1/2 of a chocolate ExLax. We don't tell her what it is. I just tell her it's a piece of chocolate and she's fine with it.
She would get so backed up that she wouldn't eat. He tummy would get really round and rock hard. I finally took her to the doc when she was all backed up like that. That's when we started the Miralax & the ExLax. I would recommend you check with your doctor before using the ExLax, just because your son is young, but it might work.
Also, if he won't eat regular foods, don't force him. Offer fruits instead. Stay away from bananas, since they can bind you up. We were told that fruits that start with P are "poop fruits." So, peaches, pears, prunes, pineapple, etc. Also juices from those fruits are good too.
Good luck! Dealing with constipation is absolutely NO fun.

try cutting down on his dairy intake and giving other fruits besides prunes. I know that every time I drink OJ it cleans me out. lol. You can but glycerin suppositories and use those when he is really constipated. Try a small fruit smoothie in the morning and see if that helps.

PB8 - we open it up and dump 1/2-1 capsule of this wonderful probiotic in to their mouths. None of the pediatric ones worked. We also get our kids adjusted by our chiropractor.

I had a skeptical friend go with her 3 month old who would have a bowel movement every 5-6 days. His sacrum was adjusted and fell alseep immediately. Within 30 minutes, he had a poop fill his diaper and all the way up his neck. Without the PB8, he had bowel movement daily for there on out. She was shocked.
