Hi Moms,

We are currently living in WA, and my husband may be getting transferred to San Antonio. His office would be in the UTSA/Fiesta Texas area, right off of 1604. We would like to get a house outside of 1604. I am a little familiar with the area. I have a uncle who lives in SA, I grew up in Houston, and spent every Memorial Day in New Braunsfels.

I think we might have narrowed our search in Helotes area. Is this a good area? Which are the best school districts?? Since having lived in Houston for so long, we are used to traffic, so that will not bother us. Also, since my kids are only 3 & 4, do you have any recommendations of preschools in the area??
Thanks for your help!!

What can I do next?

I don't know much about Helotes, but we've just moved to the IH-10/Boerne Stage Road area, and we like it a lot. (That's about 5 miles outside of 1604.) We're in the Northside school district, which is very good; I think Helotes is actually in the same district. Depending on what kind of housing you're looking for, there are several new developments in our area and a lot of growth.

I'm taking my kids to preschool way down in town, because it's closer to my work, but I've heard good things about Oak Hills Church preschool, which is just a couple of miles up IH-10, outside of 1604.

Good luck to you - moving is such a pain with little ones. I will send positive thoughts your way!

Helotes is nice if you want to be in the country. However, Bandera Rd is probably one of the worst in town as far as traffic goes...I know you said traffic wouldn't bother you, but that is the only road in and out of Helotes and it is almost ALWAYS packed...and they're talking about making it a toll road soon. The area inside 1604 is hit or miss. Braun Station is nice, but nothing else around there really is. I used to live over on that side of town and it was nice up until the last couple of years we lived there. We're in Stone Oak now and I like the feel of the neighborhoods over here better. If you want country living and want to be near to your husbands office, I'd recommend checking out the neighborhoods off I10 (i.e. Fair Oaks, Stonewall Ranch).

You can check out this website for childcare

http://www.dfps.state.tx.us/child_care/Search_Texas_Child...

It is thru the state - you can put in what you are looking for in childcare and it will give you a list of daycares, preschools, etc. that you could look into

Hi, E.:

I can definitely give you information about 1604/Fiesta Texas area because that's exactly where I lived. It's a very quickly developing area, so traffic is really bad on 1604, in-bound during the morning commute, out-bound during the evening commute. It's only a two-lane highway in both directions. With that said, Houston's traffic is probably worse (I grew up in Spring/north Houston and returned to Houston for seven years after graduating college).

Helotes is a neat area, definitely rural, but not too far from the city. I can't tell you much about Helotes School District, but I think they only have a couple of elementaries and one middle school. As far as I know, all of the teens in Helotes go to Sandra Day O'Connor H.S., which is a Northside ISD school. O'Connor is a great high school - I was an English teacher there for six years! I wish I could give you more information on preschools, but I just don't know - my daughter just turned three, so now that is what I'm looking for up here in Vancouver. The best school districts in San Antonio are Northside, North East and Alamo Heights, Northside and North East service a huge area, so keep that in mind.

My daughter attended AppleTree Day School on 1604 at Old Prue Road, which is pretty close to Helotes. The phone number is ###-###-#### - talk with Alan, Jennifer or Lloyd. My daughter really thrived there and it's really reasonably priced. You'll be pleased with the savings of daycares in San Antonio as opposed to here, and, I suspect AppleTree has a preschool program.

Hope this information helps!
