Hi..How exciting to be moving to the east. I grew up in Pennsylvania, so I have a special place in my heart for the east coast. My cousin's husband and family own Pink Transfer-based in Monrovia. They have moved many of our family members over the years including my parents twice (east once and back west). It is family owned and operated for many years and generations. What ever you do DO NOT hire World Moving and Storage. They were rude, broke our stuff, argued with us about paying to cover the broken stuff, scratched walls and floors, forgot to pack whole cabinets full of stuff, screamed and yelled at us over the phone. The worst moving experience EVER. Save yourself.

Start by contacting the Better Business Bureau to see which companies have the best ratings and fewest complaints. That's what the BBB is there for.

JBL in Van Nuys is THE BEST! They moved my brother across country and they have moved me and other members of my family multiple times and I have always been extremely pleased! ###-###-####

I used Allied to move cross country about six years ago (from NC to San Francisco). They were more expensive than some of the other quotes we received but we had a great experience. The service was great: they were extremely professional, careful, and communicative. They packed everything in NC with tremendous care, and called me in San Francisco to let me know that they were a little early and was it OK to finish the delivery early. They were extremely careful with all our stuff and nothing happened to any of the furniture (we have lots of antique furniture and irreplaceable pieces). It was a big move and not a single piece was damaged in any way.

Stay away from Suddath. We had to use them for a move from San Francisco to Los Angeles just over a year ago (they were the preferred provider of the company that was paying for our move). The people who arrived to pack were nice and friendly but they did a terrible job packing. I had a hard time communicating with the company regarding the delivery date or other issues (read on). People did not return my calls, and I was to find out later they had "left the company" (this happened on at least three occasions). Delivery day was terrible: practically every item of furniture that came off the truck was either badly broken or damaged in some way. In all, over 20 pieces of furniture were broken: our sofa, marble-topped dining room table, several chairs, the list goes on. What wasn't broken was badly scratched. Suddath did reimburse us for broken pieces that could not be fixed or replaced (including some wedding gifts) and they did pay to have the furniture fixed - but it took a while to settle it all and it made for an incredibly stressful move.

I would definitely research reputable movers. There are a lot of moving companies on the internet that promise the world and then hold your stuff hostage unless you pay them more than you had agreed on. Good luck!

I don't know if they do long distance moves, but it's worth checking into. I've used Delancey Street Movers 4 times now for local moves and have nothing but good things to say about them. It's actually part of a job training program for a non-profit drug rehab. program. They can't accept tips or food - any $ you give them above their actual charge is a tax-deductible donation. ###-###-####

This might be small to you but we found that it's beter to provide them with some supplies. The guys we used claimed 27 rolls of tape. We know they didn't use them all, bc we gave some back, but got charged $3 ea anyway. Also, control all your small electronic items. We are pretty good about where our things are, and the day we moved, these items were still to be packed, sitting on the table. Three months later we still cannot find our ipod and harddrive. You don't think of these things until they're missing. We're also missing a $100 giftcard that was on the table. I was careful to not behave as if I don't trust movers by leaving my purse in house while I went to car several times. In hindsight, treat ur belongings around strangers as you always should, esp when they're on your property for a few hours. The keys to the new house were also missing so it delayed our move by a few hours, costing us extra time. Well, guess what? Those movers helped broke the lock to our new house so we could get in. Does it make one wonder? I don't have names to tell you, just remind you to be careful of strangers you never see again.

I'm not sure if they move out of state but North Star is supposedly the best one out there. I had a friend who worked for them and he said most other companies add in extra fees - North Star is reasonably priced and offer excellent service. We used them and they were great
