We are planning a long distance move in 3 weeks and have not chosen a moving company yet. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good company to use? Or if you had a bad experience, let me know who we should steer away from. We have been getting quotes from companies that will load the truck for you and also some that just bring the truck and we have to pack it. Any suggestions about that would be helpful too. It's a little less expensive to pack your own, but companies that pack for you do it every day and will probably pack better than we could.

We used United moving from Az to Pa and they did a great job. They packed the house up in one day and loaded the truck the next day. They covered anything broken if they did the packing (nothing broke) and the price for them was not that much different if they packed versus if we packed. When they unloaded, everything went into the room we wanted it in and they were willing to move furniture around if we wanted anything moved once it was in the room. They also had to take apart a few pieces to move them and everything was put back together.

We moved from PA to NC about a year and a half ago and had a horrible time! I suggest that you have the company you choose come out and do an estimate for you. We had one company (of course I forget the name now) give us an over the phone estimate that was $1500. The day came for them to move us (literally 5 days before we closed on our house and moved down), and they told us it was now going to cost $6000. After fighting with them, we "fired" them and had to start over with almost no time. We ended up using ABF. They were cheap, and they said that if we didn't use the whole truck, we got parts of our money back. We then hired movers in PA and in NC to pack and unpack the truck for us. It still cost us around $2700, but that was MUCH less than the $6000 the other company was going to charge us. Good luck with your move!

When we had a long distance move from NC to TX the company we used was North American and they did a good job. They did most of the packing, I did the unpacking at our new destination.

10 yrs ago, we moved only 3 miles or so from the first house we built to this current home we built. At that time, we used Mayflower. They provided me with packing materials and I did a lot of packing and moving before they did. They did all the heavy bulky items and some boxes.

We had a good experience with both companies.

Good luck

We used Wayne Moving and Storage, 1-800-635-1131, for a long distance move. They moved us to Philly from Michigan. They did all the packing, too. We were very happy with them. They worked quickly. The men on the crew were friendly and professional. Everything arrived in great shape. I don't know how competitive their rates are, though, since my husband's company paid for our move.

Good luck on your move!

We've moved cross country twice in the last 10 months--yuck--but the moving company we used was absolutely the best! It's a you pack, they drive type company. It's called Broadway Express (we worked with Krissy Brandt). Anyway, you get the phone number of the driver who you work with directly--they bring all the moving pads and straps. I can't recommend them enough!
