I just moved, and ended up buying some from Home Depot and Lowes. I didn't even know they sold them!! They are actually pretty cheap, and they work well for moving but aren't as thick and strong as the expensive ones you can buy at the moving companies. Also they have many many sizes to choose from. Good luck!

Le Anne, We moved about 2 1/2 years ago and most of the boxes I used came from Price Chopper. I got mostly the apple boxes from the Produce Department (I went to the 135th and Quivera location in OP). The nice thing about the boxes was that they had not been broken down, so there was no need for packing tape, also they had great lids and stacked well. The bad thing was that since they were not broken down I could only get a few in my car at a time. I went VERY REGULARLY, sometimes 2 and 3 times a day to get boxes.
Hope this helps.
M.
PS I've also heard that liquor store boxes are good.

When we moved a few years ago, I went to Hen House and asked the produce manager for their empty apple boxes. They are actually two boxes that fit together, which makes them very sturdy, and they are a manageable size for carrying. You may have to go back several times, as they become available to get what you need, but they are free!

In the Kansas city area you might contact one of the Bridging the Gap recycling centers and ask them if you could check the cardboard bin. This would best be done in person with the manager at the location. Also check with the licquor stores in your area. Booze boxes are fairly strong and are good for heavy stuff(books, tools, dishes etc) You also might ask for a couple of sacks of Newspaper for packing. If you can find file boxes on sale, you may find they are cheaper than the small mailing boxes. Good Luck B.

Check the free section of Craig's List or post a want for some. I usually see someone posting that they've got some for free.

We just moved a couple weeks ago. I had gotten my boxes from Hy-Vee, they were empty apple boxes. They weren't incredibly large, but they were big enough for us (we had a bunch of them). You might try calling your local grocery store to see if you can take some boxes. I used to work at a K-Mart (a REALLY long time ago), and I remember people asking me if they could take some boxes; I always let them.
Good luck with your move!

A great place for boxes is the liquor store. They are really sturdy and not too big so they don't get super heavy. And since they come with removable inserts for the bottles, they're perfect for packing glassware.

try craig's list. lots of people give them away for free, after moving. Also liquor stores usually have them stacked in front.
