Moving Advice

As a professional organizer, I am a big advocate of getting rid of stuff unless you use it. Hanging onto clutter is one of the biggest hindrances to becoming and staying organized. Here is an excerpt from a handout I give at my presentations:

• LESS is MORE.
Declutter regularly and don't re-accumulate too much stuff. Only keep and purchase items you are certain you will use. Flylady.net is a website that has helped me develop routines that keep my home running very smoothly with minimal effort, and I would recommend checking it out. Like Flylady says, “You can’t organize clutter. You can just get rid of it.”
Beneficial side effects of decluttering:
o Our clutter can truly be a blessing to someone else who will use it
o We know where our things are
o We commit to actually use what we keep
o We become reacquainted with what we already own
o We spend less money on frivolous purchases

Good luck with your move and congrats on being done with school! If you don't need it, love it, or use it then toss it! It is so liberating once you experience it, but it's an ongoing process because we all have a tendency to gather more stuff.

We used a company called ABF to move our stuff here from PA. They will drop the trailer off in front of your place, then you pack your stuff yourself then they come and pick it up the next day and drive it to your new destination in a couple days. We used a car towing company for my husbands classic car, I think we found the information for that company on the abf website. That was the cheapest easiest way we found to move. Good luck.

Hi C.! I moved here from Milwaukee, WI. about 6mo ago. I did the move all by myself. I used a penske truck and had my car on a car dolly. My move was much cheaper for me to do it myself and not pay a moving company. I would suggest calling penske. They have different sizes trucks and great prices. The post office does have coupons for discounts on moving. My move here was under $2,ooo including the gas. Hope this helps. And feel free to contact me by phone anytime @ ###-###-####. S.

you might consider packing your car up as much as possible and shipping the rest via Door-to-Door storage. They drop a unit off at your house, you pack it up and let them know when to pick it up. They will also ship to wherever. If you dont know where your going to live they will also store it until you tell them to drop it off.

Aside from that? Fly a friend(s) down from SD and ask them to drive a Uhaul back for/with you. One big road trip :) It sounds expensive but it really is the cheapest alternative

If it makes you feel any better you can give things away on freecycle.org It is a great way to be green and gleen without feeling like you are just throwing things away. People offer things and others pick them up or vice versa. You can also try to sell items on Craigslist or ebay.
