MOVIE Suggestion for a Group of 13-14 Year Olds ?

My daughter is having a birthday party on Friday. She invited 8 kids (4 boys and 4 girls) all around the same age 13-14 years old. They were going to watch a movie together (part of the party). I don't know what would work for all of them. Ideally I would prefer a PG film, as many of the PG-13 could go as R movies from what I have seen. Yet am open to any suggestions. Nothing scary (no horror films) or anything that would be inappropriate. I am thinking to just order it from Netflix, so will have a bigger choice. If you have any ideas that might be good I would appreciate it. Thanks !!

**I have never met any of the parents, and do not even have their phone numbers, and personally, don't think I should call around and ask other parents what I should do at our party, as no one will be happy with that if I don't go with their idea. I want to pick something that would be appropriate and no parent would have an issue with. Any comedy or something that might be a fun movie ? I personally don't let my own kids watch Twilight, I don't like this huge push towards the vampire genre I am seeing in the movies and bookstores, I don't let my kids watch that, so that wouldn't be an option.

What can I do next?

Why not a cult classic? Do they like quirky movies? My SD (17) loves Labyrinth and The Princess Bride. She also likes Pixar movies like Up and MegaMind and Despicable Me.

I also agree that a percent will watch the movie, but not all will and you just go with what the birthday kid wants, IMO.

I'd get the phone numbers of the parents so when they are late retrieving their child or there is an issue, you can contact them.

Have they seen True Grit? We took our kids (13 and 10) when it came out at the movies, and they LOVED it. (We did too). It is a western, but very much NOT cliches. Was very well done, and our kids STILL repeat some of the lines from it that were loaded with sarcasm and humor.
Nothing objectionable in it.

My experience with party's is that they are not going to watch the entire movie all the way through. We have BBQ's, birthday party's, sleepovers, etc... all year long and I have NEVER gotten the kids to sit through and entire movie. Kids of that age get distracted easily, and they would rather socialize than sit quietly. This would be my suggestion: Save your money. If you have a personal movie collection, sit with your daughter and go through them for what you both agree is appropriate then write down all of the titles and have the group vote on them, majority wins, or pick one out of a hat. Better yet if you have a way to make a playlist of music do that instead and let them just have fun with the music in the background. And one last thing from personal experience, I know you didn't ask for this, but make sure their supervised. When I was this age we would try to sneak away from parents to go make out in the dark corners of the house :) Ah...good times. Good luck and have fun!

If you do something new, a lot of kids will have already seen it and not be interested. My suggestion is to pull out an oldie but goodie that many haven't seen. This generation may not have seen Ferris Buellers Day off, Risky Business, Grease, Top Gun, Back to the Future, Sixteen Candles, Jaws, Star Wars. I would find a classic to introduce them to.

the Twilight movies are pretty popular. maybe talk to the parents of the other kids and see if they have any suggestions. that way you will know what the kids like and have an idea of what the other parents feel is okay. some parents are more strict and some more lenient so this can help to prevent some ticked off parents knocking down your door. good luck!

will be echoing some other suggestions but here's ones my kids LOVE.

Army of Darkness, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Goonies, Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Natural, The Sandlot, any of the John Hughes films, Any of the star wars films, Star Trek, Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock movies are great suspense, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Carribean, Willow, Up, Despicable Me, Lord of the Rings (although those are probably too long), Pitch Black/Chronicles of Riddick, The Fast & The Furious.

I could probably come up with more my kids (and their friends) enjoy but that would require going down to the basement and the DVD shelf (with about 500 movies on it).

My daughter LOVED the twilight books but HATES the movies and boys aren't all that into them.

I'd ask your daughter what she wants to watch.
What's your party theme? Maybe try to find a movie to go with your theme?

"How to Train your Dragon" was good.
So are the "Night at the Museum" movies.
Is "Lemonade Mouth" too advanced for 14 yr olds? (it's on Netflix streaming)

My mom watched "Summer Eleven" with my 10 yr old neice last week (streaming off Netflix). She said it was good, but she was nervous about the questions that might have come up from my neice. I think that's more of a girl movie and less of a boy/girl party movie.

added: GOONIES!

I think netflix would be a great idea. This way you can have all of them pick a movie that you are okay with and that they will all enjoy watching. We do that with our kids, and it is a huge success so that we don't have fighting.

I don't have any real suggestions for that age group, but here is a site that you can use to check out any movies that you are considering. You can browse by rating as well. (Wow, second time I've recommended this site today :)
Good luck...hope they have fun!

That's a really hard question since we don't really know your daughter. Maybe you could put on here what kind of movies she likes and then we could make suggestions. Also, have you asked her?

Are they into Harry Potter? Your kids might not be, if you are tending away from the vampire genre, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I don't have Netflix, so forgive me if none of these on there, but here are some safe suggestions. I've also included links to previews/trailers so you can see for yourself:

Frozen:

A horror suspense teen/college age kid film about survival after a ski trip gone wrong. It is pretty good for suspense and youth appeal to both boys and girls. Rated R because there is language and some innuendo during a conversation between two guys regarding a girl in the beginning, and in the middle there is a very grizzly scene of an animal attack of two skiers. There is no sex.

Soul Surfer (not sure if it's out on DVD yet but it's based on a true story about an American teen girl surfer who has a life changing event. Very inspirational and clean.

Love Comes Softly (Features actress Katherine Heigl and based on wildly popular historic romance novels of Janette Oke. The Oke novels (I think there are five in the series are widely read by young women looking for an alternative to the Vampire teen romances of today. If your girls like romantic stories of rugged cowboys and prairie girls during the pioneer days, they'll love this popular movie. It is very clean, but doesn't disappoint in suspense, action sweeping scenes of open prairie, and touching and often sweet romance scenes with the heroine of the story and her beau. They aired originally on the Hallmark Channel, but are available on DVD. You can sometimes find them uploaded on youtube.

Here's a link to buy the actual DVDs and others directly from Hallmark. I did find links to download the movies, but I didn't know if they were safe, so I didn't want to risk giving you a bad link.

Any of the recent productions of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensibility. Classic teen romance of Regency Era England.

Alfred Hitchcock's mystery suspense thriller "The Rear Window" is great timeless fun, excitement and romance. I saw this when I was teen and quickly forgot the actors were the same age as my grandparents! Grace Kelly is stunning and the conversations witty. It's just a classic and there is nothing offensive.

The Princess Bride is a comedy spoof on romatic fairytales. It's a classic.
