Motion Sickness!

Hey moms!
My husband and I are taking a romantic five night cruise on the Carribean without the munchkins next month! I'm super excited, but I tend to get moderate motion sickness. I have been on a cruise before for our honeymoon and I took Dramamine. It totally knocked me out! I slept a lot of the trip. I have heard that there is a non drowsy formula but it's not as effective. Do any of you out there know of something that is extremely effective but won't make me sleepy?? I would love to hear any suggestions. Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

Ginger root is the best. My husband gets sick on any type of ship and this worked for him. You can find it at a health food store. The lady on the last ship we were on who told us about ginger also said do not go indoors if you feel sick, this only makes things worse. Good Luck and have fun

Hi L., Congrats on the cruise! My fiance and I just went the first weekend in October. I took dramamine, it made me sick to my stomach and sleepy. I don't know what I was thinking because my last cruise I had put on one of those patches and it worked great! When we got back in Oct, we had bad sea legs for about 2 days after we got OFF the ship! We were told to take ginger capsules and it immediately helped and went away. So as a back up, pack some of those, you can get them anywhere, we got them at Walgreens. Good luck and have fun!

There are motion sickness bands that worked for me. I got motion sickness on my first cruise that my parents took me on when I was about 18 years old. We didn't know I would get sick until I did. It took a while, but we decided top watch a movie and that did it. We went to the on board store and got one right away. It worked wonders. I got one on my second cruise when I was 29 at a drug store before our cruise. They do not make you drowsy and you are able to move around and you don't feel sick at all. Anyhow, I hope this helps.

I use the bands, called SeaBands, that you can buy at Walgreens. They are not attractive, so you wouldn't want to wear them with a fancy dress, but otherwise, they work wonders for me!

My mom gets motion sickness very badly. She needed something to help her get on a plane. The drug store has pressure point wrist bands that really helped. She didn't get sick once in the 2 weeks she was flying, taking ferries, and travelling in the back seat of a car. Best of all, there is no medicine to make you feel bad. Hope you have a great time!

Hi L.. I sometimes suffer with stomach upset because of stress and instead of using the chemical formulas on the market i prefer to use ginger. I always have a stack of crystalised ginger in my freezer and as a nurse i also recommend it to my patients. Every one of them has come back and told me how much better they feel. My young Niece tends to get travel sick and her parents were giving her medication for it but that also meant she was drowsy for ages afterwards. I tried the ginger on her but she didn't like the solid and said it was too strong, so i gave her Ginger Ale, not Ginger Beer but Ginger Ale. It worked just great and there are absolutely no side effects from it.

Goog luck and have a great trip.

Hi! We went on a 7 day cruise for our honeymoon in 07. It was AMAZING! For motion sickness I recommend "Sea Bands". You can get them pretty much anywhere. I got mine at Wal Mart or Walgreens. They are these black braclet things that have a plastic piece that pushes on a pressure point. they are less than $10 if I remember correctly. I do not have motion sickness, so I did not use them on the cruise, however I used them throughout my entire pregnancy to stop feeling sick. They were the only thing that worked!

Good Luck!

Hope your trip goes well! I get bad motion sickness in almost anything moving (car included) and I tend to chew peppermint gum or eat ginger altoids. This seems to primarily do the trick for me. If it gets worse than that, I use the Boiron homeopathic remedy for motion sickness...I'm not sure what the herbal formula is but it works for me. I have also tried the bracelets that go on your wrists and they sit on your pressure points. They worked but I found them tight and my skin was sensitive to the fabric. Good luck!

Go to your doctor and have him give you a perscription for the motion sickness patch! I got sick on our last cruise so I tried the patch. I did not have any adverse reactions to it! I can't take the dramamine type products as they totally knock me out too. Also, take ginger pills (health food stores) as they are a natural way to deal with motion sickness! I used to live in the caribbean (St. Maartin) and my "boatie" friends swore by Ginger! :) Good Luck and wear lots of sunscreen!
