Mosquito Bite Treatment?

My daughter awoke to a huge mosquite bite on her browbone. It has made the entire eye area red and swollen. What can I treat it with that a toddler will let me apply, won't rub off, and won't run into her eye?

If you advocate Benedryl, do you mean the cream or the liquid?

Whatever you do, do NOT use both Benadryl liquid and cream at the same time. The active ingredient, diphenhydramine, WILL cause her to break out in hives if it is overdoesed *as in using both liquid and cream together*
you can do a combo of liquid Benadryl and an anti itch cream as long as the active ingredient is not the diphenhydramine. Trust me, i learned the hard way with a 4 year old :)

rub it with the inside of a banana peel. It takes the redness and itchiness out, and is safe near eyes.

I have heard that a hot compress--not so hot it burns the skin--or even apple cider vinegar may help relieve the itching. I have not tried but heard that placing a piece of scotch tape on a bite for a few hours may help relieve itching, and pulling it off helps remove any of the proteins that cause it.

I use Arnica gel on my little guy. The itching stops and it dries up and goes down super fast-A. ;-)

Been there! My daughter, now 17 has had mosquito reactions since toddlerhood. Topical creams NEVER helped, not even a little. Her doc said that reg. liq. Benedryl was not strong enough (she was a toddler at the time) and prescribed another anti-histhamine that began with an "M". I'm sorry I can't remember it, but it worked wonders. For many years we had a running prescription of the stuff. She still has occasional reactions like when she was younger, but good ol' generic of Benedryl works just fine. Good luck!

You can try a baking soda/water paste or I use After Bite for Kids (it does not sting), which is essentially a baking soda paste. Good luck...my son also gets huge welts from mosquito bites. This seems to help!

At Walgreens they sell After Bite for kids. It rubs in like a lotion. I have used it before and it takes away the itching.

Benedryl is good but you can also just try cool cloths before using a over the counter medication.

Just a thought.

Hi!
We had a similar experience. My son had a mosquito bite on his forehead and his eye lid. His eyes were so swollen we could not even recognize him. He had scratched the bite and it had become infected. He is on antibiotics for 10 days and were advised to give him benedryl (liquid) for the first 24 hours after the doctor's appt. The Dr. said that the best thing to do as soon as a bite ocurs is to put cortisol cream on the bite. But only if the bite hasn't been scratched open. We were also given an ointment, however, when my son rubbed his eyes he would rub some of it off and into his eye so we had stopped with the ointment.

Good luck!

I tend to use the Benadryl (cream) or Calamine lotion for the itching as most of the other posts mentioned. You can also try rubbing deodorant on it, I think there's something about the zinc in there that helps with the itching. But one other thing, keep a close eye on it, my daughter got a mosquito bite last summer under her eye and because all the tissue around the eye is so sensitive, the bite caused an infection and she was on antibiotics. If the swelling doesn't go down in a day or so, have her checked out by your doctor. Good luck!

dab a little vinegar. It will sting for a second but it takes the itch away and decreases the swelling.

Ask your pediatrician if you can do both & how much. Also he/she might recommend Zyrtec or Atarax.

Close to the eye... .I don't know. I would leave it alone. For other areas, ammonia works instantly to relieve the itch. Baking soda mixed with water also works. Anything astringent. Witch hazel might be okay by the eye.

I've heard a dab of Tree Tea Oil works wonders. Just make sure it doesn't drip in her eyes, as I'm SURE it would burn.

You can pick up a small bottle at Whole Foods.

Hello G S:

For itching, try CALAMINE LOTION (ask the pharmacist) for it soothes the external itch on contact. Apply it 3-4 times a day with a Q-Tip. As for the redness and swelling, BENADRYL is the best.

This happens to my two of my boys every year. I give them benedryl liquid and usually rub calamine lotion on it. But recently I found out that VINEGAR works for mosquito bites as well. I always used it for sunburns but happen to have a sunburn with a mosquito bite in the same place and rubbed the vinegar and it worked for both, then heard someone say rub vinegar on your mosquito bites and it stops the itching.

This happens to my daughter every summer. It's always near her eye. It will probably make her other eye swell up as well. It's worse when they first wake up. Give her benedryl for the itching. It will take up to a week for her to look like herself again.

Sounds crazy but cut a clove of garlic in half and rub the garlic on the bite. Someone told me about it and I just tried this a couple weeks ago for the first time and it made the bite shrink up by morning.

Try the Benadryl Gel. It has to be peeled off or it will wear off. Try to keep her still for the few seconds it takes to dry. I find that, on me, I sometimes need an additional layer of the gel.
Good luck!
