Morning Sickness Equals Healthy Baby??

From what I have read morning sickness or lack there of does not really indicate the health of your fetus. My friend told me that her uncle who is an OBGYN said that the more sickness you have the healthier your baby. I think this is just something he tells women who are very sick to make them feel better. I am interested in hearing from moms who had zero morning sickness (like me) and those who were sick for months and what was the health of their infants.

What can I do next?

Total baloney. Two pregnancies with no morning sickness, two healthy kids. The one *with* morning sickness was a miscarriage.

I had one pregnancy I lost and it wasn't so much the lack of morning sickness that indicated an issue as lack of food aversions.

With one bio child, I had no morning sickness. With the other, I threw up every day. They're both fine.

That makes no sense. I bet you'll find from your responses that there is no correlation.

I had absolutely no morning sickness and my son was perfectly healthy and on time! Although, he was huge (10 lbs 3oz!) but that I think was because I had gestational diabetes and large babies on both sided of the family. My BFF had the opposite experience – sick as a dog all day for the first 4 months and started EVERY day of her pregnancy running to the bathroom. She also had a very healthy, on time baby. I agree that the uncle probably wants to calm the fears of first time moms that their morning sickness could hurt their babies.

I had no mornig sickness with either pregnancy. The first time was with triplets and tehy warned me that I could get it really bad. NOthing. I even told them i couldn;t be pregnant--of course that mixed with fertility issues made me wonder. My secnd pregnancy I had no sickness either. If I hadn't worried about anemia or something becasue I was so tired, I would not have even thought about going to the doc until much later. I found out at 10 weeks. My trips were born 6 weeks early and very healthy. My little one was born at 41 weeks and is very healthy. I have a friend who could not even drink water without getting sick and her daughter was also very healthy.

I have never had morning sickness and I have three very healthy, happy kids. In fact, the ten year old and 7 year old are above level in school. My one year old is meeting if not exceeding all of her milestones. With her, I did not even know I was pregnant until 16 1/2 weeks along.

I don't think morning sickness is an indication of your fetus' health; I think it is an indication of how well your body tolerates the hormonal / physical changes that our bodies go through when pregnant.

There is enough to stress over in life than things you really can't change anyway.

Hi BP,

The baby gets the nutrition first so if you're sick then the baby is getting the bulk of the nutrition. That doesn't mean the baby is getting enough but it does mean you are NOT getting enough for the both of you. Morning sickness IS normal but it can be prevented with a prenatal that is REALLY absorbing. Most prenatals don't absorb and some are even dangerous. They create free radicals that create disease. I take a vitamin that is guaranteed to absorb and doesn't create free radicals.

I was sick from conception to delivery with my first child. She had more difficulty with her health than my second child who I was only sick with for a few months. I didn't know all the information I noted in my first paragraph when I was having my children but I've been able to help family members now that I know what I know. My caveat here is that most people assume their children are healthy simply because the doctor doesn't see anything wrong. I was told my children were healthy too. Most conditions are not visible for almost 10 years after they begin.

Bottom line: Nutrition is critical during pregnancy.

God bless,

M.

I was not sick at all with my son. With my daughter I lost 30 pounds and was sick the entire time. She was born with a CHD and has had some other medical problems as she has grown older. I think it's one of those old wives tales. I was told morning sickness means you are having a girl. I think it just sucks and that people don't know how to comfort you so they make something up ;)

I had no morning sickness with any of my 4 kids, and had 4 healthy babies....I don't think it is related to a healthier baby - just a release of more hormones by some women....that is my understanding.....

I had NO morning sickness with my son- he was born at 42 weeks perfectly healthy. My daughter made me sick all day the entire 9 mos, and she was born at 41 weeks, healthy and thriving. I think all pregnancies are different. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones. :)

not true. i had "nausea gravidium", extreme nausea, and it turned out that i had a molar pregnancy. i kept telling the ob that it was dif from previous pregs and she said that it was good i was nauseous. then she checked my hcg level and it was over 100,000-which was too high for how many weeks i was. the subsequent sono revealed the molar.

Actually, there is statistical evidence showing that morning sickness does in fact indicate a healthy baby, in the sense that your chances of miscarriage are really low if you have morning sickness. So the Dr wasn't making it up.

So, now this does not mean that if you don't have morning sickness you won't have a perfectly healthy baby, it just means that morning sickness is a "sign" that your chances of miscarrying are low.

I have read one study that indicated that women with severe morning sickness did have a lower incidence of miscarriage than women without. However the study was quite specific about differentiating between feeling nauseated and actually vomiting. The lower incidence of miscarriage was seen in women who were sick enough to vomit frequently.
This is not to say that women with no morning sickness won't have healthy pregnancies and deliver healthy babies, as you know, every day women who had no morning sickness deliver perfect babies. There is no reason to assume that no nausea means that there is something wrong with your baby.
I was sick, throwing up nearly everyday for seven months with my first pregnancy and went on to deliver a 9lb. 3 oz. very healthy baby boy. I am expecting baby #2 in March and it has been more of the same. I'm all in favor of anything anyone is willing to do in terms of trying to make me feel better, in this case, there just happens to be some science behind it.

Well in my case, I've been pregnant 6 times which resulted in 3 healthy kids. With my live births I had the worst morning sickness, actually all day sickness. With the ones I lost I didn't. With the first loss it was too early to even get morning sickness. With the second I had it mildly for a week and thought I just got off lucky that time. With the third I had if for a day and I knew something was not right, that one turned out to be an ectopic pg. I wouldn't say morning sickness equals healthy baby because everyones body handles pregnancy differently. I know with mine if I have morning sickness that means the pregnancy is progressing normally. That's just how my body handles pregnancy, no matter how healthy I eat.

I've heard that too. Supposedly the more hormones you have, it makes you more nauseated but it also means that you have a better chance of maintaining the pregnancy. I think it really all depends on the person, some people are susceptible to hormone changes that cause nausea (like me, all nine months) and some are fine.

I was very sick (not actually vomiting, but so nauseous that I almost could not function) with my first pregnancy. It was a very healthy boy. He's 12 now. He has seasonal rhinitis, but otherwise pretty healthy. I was more sick with our second (again, not much vomiting, but so nauseous that I couldn't care for our 2 yr old, and had to have help with him b/c I couldn't function. I used Zofran for a few months just to be able to make my son lunches, keep him from catching the house on fire, and take a shower). Daughter was born even healthier than our son. She has hardly ever even had a cold. And only one real stomach bug that I can recall (When she was 6 she threw up in the car on the way to the Xmas play on Xmas eve!) Our son had several as a toddler and preschooler. He generally seems more sensitive to loud noises and strong odors.

I don't think you can say that my being sick during pregnancy had any direct correlation to their health. Maybe, like one other person said, it could be a marker for a lesser likelihood of miscarriage? A predictor of YOUR body's health and adaptability to the pregnancy hormones, rather than a predictor of your baby's health.

I think that OB's tell women that to help them feel better. When you are THAT sick, it really helps to hear something like that.. even if in the back of your mind you know it's probably just to make you feel better. :)
I know that I was constantly reminding myself that "it's ALLLLL worth it in the end".... several times a day....

My nausea, both times, lasted from about 6 weeks (literally... I was sick that soon) until I was in ACTIVE LABOR.

Not true, I have 3 girls I lost my 1st baby a boy at 18 weeks. I got really sick with each but my worst was my 1st so that isn't true at all. Plus I can't see how throwing your guts up means baby is healthy or not.
