Morning Sickness - Gonzales,LA

I am about 7 weeks pregnant with my second child. I had bad morning sickness with my first and I was hoping it would be different this time around but no such luck. And it wouldn't be so bad it if was actually only morning sickness but I sometimes feel queasy all day and get sick at different times of the day. I tried many things with my first pregnancy and nothing seemed to help. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of things I could try other than eating crackers because I think by this point crackers are making me sick.

What can I do next?

I can relate. I had morning sickness with both of my boys. Well more like all day sickness. It was a little better the second time. Crackers and 7-up helped some. I found that some smell would make me very sick to my stomach. Try using candles or plug-ins that have a smell that you can handle. Hope it helps.

Oh how I sympathize! I paid mega bucks for Zophran when I was pregnant and it didn't even help much. Little did I know that Phenergan has a supository that works miracles... found out with the stomach virus after Zoe was born! Why didn't they tell me! I tried to choke down Phenergan orally and even when I kept it down it didn't work. The supository took away the nausia and did not make me too sleepy after the first day or so. Try it and let me know how it works! I am so nervous to get pregnant again because it was so hard!
Blessings!

Congrats on your new arrival soon! I too had morning sickness with my pregnancies. I had SEVERE morning sickness! I too had tried everything. Herbal treatments, eating or not eating certain foods, not going in a car- that always made me sick, etc. Nothing helped. I was eventually diagnosed with Hyperemesis Gravedena. You can look it up on webmd. I'm not saying that what you have is that, however, I did finally get relief from mine! It came in the form of a wonderful medication called Zofran. Zofran is typically used in chemo patients to fight their nausea. I was one of the first pregnant women to use it in that context, and have had the maker contact me for studies many times over the years to see how me and my children are doing. Which is great! Niether of us have any side effects, and in all actuality this medication saved the lives of me and my children. Ask your OB about Zofran. It may or may not be something that will work for you, but it's worth a shot. Sorry I don't have any other wisdom to share with you to cure morning sickness. Unless you can get your hubby to get it, whenever mine experiences anything close to pregnancy and childbirth, it always makes me feel better! lol

Potatoes and fresh pineapple as well as ginger actually have enzymes in them that fight nausea.
I also found that Indian food was amazing for my "morning" sickness. (I'm usually sick around the clock without break for the first 3-4 1/2 months) After eating at an Indian restraunt I would be nausea free for a very lovely little while. Something about the blend of spices.
Eat lots of small meals and never let yourself get really hungry, as getting hungry can really intensify it. Fried foods can make it worse too, so try to stay away from that.
There are also safe medications your OB can prescribe to you that work wonders. Don't be ashamed to ask for meds. My sister-in-laws have taken medicine for their INSANE nausea (they will vomit 10-14 times a day all nine months!) And their babies have been healthy beautiful and abnormally bright!
A friend of mine that was a nurse for twenty years told me nausea is a good sign, it means the pregnancy has "took" and usually women with a healthy amount of morning sickness won't miscarry. Hang in there!

try ginger snaps, and sipping on gingerale.

The ginger is a natural antacid, and anti nausea medicine.

Stay Hydrated.

Some times certain smells, and certain foods can trigger a bout of morning sickness(I called it all day sickness) so avoid them if at all possible.

If it doesn't improve by your 2nd trimester ask your doctor for some phenergan to manage it.

One other mom mentioned B6! I am 10 weeks and have had HORRID nausea and some vomiting as well (not comvenient at all if you already have other children or even have to go to work - I have 3 other children, too and never had it like this before)!! My Dr prescribed Fenergan. My pharmacist recommended taking 1/2 a pill that night and see how things went since it would make me drowsy. I have found that 1/2 a pill at night and then my B6 in the morning takes care of almost ALL the nausea!! If I forget it at night my next day is AWFUL! My life is so much easier with it so talk to your doctor - don't suffer!!

When I was prego, I did not want to be sick, so I took preventive measures early, as soon as we decided to have a baby. There was a book my sister found called "How to have healthy children", I don't remember the author, and my copy is packed. It had a list of vitamins and minerals to take, some in the morning and some in the evening, it worked. I was not sick at all, my sisters also used this advice and it worked for them. I think you might find the book in a library or online at half.com or a used book store. Let me know if you don't find it and I will TRY to find my copy. My children are 19 and 21, so my memory is fuzzy, but I think vitamin E was to be taken every evening at bedtime. Hope this helps. L.

With my girls milk has really helped. When I just couldn't stand the nauseau any more I would drink a small glass of milk. It seemed to help for a little bit. With my son, milk didn't help at all, but wintergreen mints did. Also I used to sleep with a glass of ginger ale next to my bed. By morning it would be flat, but if I woke up in the night feeling nauseous or in the morning, I'd take a sip. It was the sugar I think that helped. Eating a small handful of raisins in the morning also helped with one of my pregnancies. I never really wanted saltines either. I am about 6 weeks pregnant again and am still finding what works this time, but milk seems to be working again. Perhaps it's another girl? :) Anyway, you are not alone. Though I never throw up, I am nauseous all day long too for the first trimester.

I am sorry to say that I was sick daily from 6 weeks up until both of my children were born. For most women I have talked with, they typically were sick for about a month or so and that was it. I tried ginger, peppermints, crackers, etc. and nothing helped. Since my OB/GYN experienced the same thing with her pregnancies, she knew exactly what to prescribe for me. It helped tremendously, although with my second pregnancy, I learned to just go ahead and be "sick" every morning and then the rest of the day was much better. With my first pregnancy, I fought being "sick" and it was not a fun battle.

I do feel for you and I would advise that you talk with your doctor. I will be praying for your health and the health of your baby.

Have you thought of trying to infuse a bit more protein? There are a couple of different schools of thought on why some women get morning sickness. One says that it's because of a lack of protein. If you think about it, all that is growing inside you is a big ball of protein - bone, muscle, etc. The best sources are milk, yogurt, eggs, nuts (almonds sometimes hit the spot for me) poultry and beef. Two eggs in the morning or a smoothie (banana, frozen fruit of your choice, a cup of yogurt and a 1/2 cup of OJ) might hit the spot. Also, make sure you eat lots of protein at dinner, which you can usually be sure of if you include a meat. The only other bit of advice I've heard is to have a snack before bed. A small bowl of cereal with milk, a glass of milk and crackers, a yogurt. Hope this helps!

For some people, peppermint or ginger can be very soothing for an upset stomach. If you can't keep peppermint or ginger herbal tea down, try smelling the tea bags or boiling fresh ginger so the smell fills the room. Also, try eating really bland foods like the dry rice baby food mixed with water instead of milk inot a very thin cereal. I know, sounds gross, but it's very easy on the stomach and doesn't taste bad. If that doesn't help and you're throwing up more than three times a day, tell your doctor. There are medications they can prescribe so you and the baby get the nourishment you need. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon.

Hi L.,
I had to respond to this, because I had the same thing happen to me when I was pregnant with my daughter (the first prenancy for me.) I had gone back to college to try and finish up, and was in my last semester. I barely made it through, and wouldn't have without the help of so many kind and understanding professors, as I was having to miss so much class!!!! For me, I went through being able to eat different things to try to keep from being sick--crackers never worked that well for me, but my sister told me she used to eat Cheerios straight out of the box, and you can get those in all different flavors now. 7-Up is usually good to settle your stomach a little, and there for a while, McDonald's french fries was all I could think about to keep me from getting sick. (Go figure!) Maybe because they were salty. Sometimes, I would just eat a piece of bread--nothing on it, just plain bread. That would help, too. Another thing that I tried toward the end was taking Tums when I first felt the "sick-time of the day" coming on--like you, it was not always in the morning, and sometimes would last all day long. I had a girl that time around, and the next pregnancy was completely different with very little sickness, etc., and that time it was a boy. I wish you the best of luck, and wish I could tell you a cure-all, but ask your doctor about taking Tums-they have calcium in them, and are pretty mild. They did help, even though they are for heartburn, generally.

I am currently pregnant with my second. I am 29 weeks along. With my first no morning sickness. This one I am still not the same to this day. However from five weeks to fourteen weeks I was sick, sick, sick. I called my doctor and asked if there was anything I could take to control the sickness. He gave me medicine. You might ask your doctor about meds that are safe. Other than that I did not eat much but I would eat because it did help. Bland foods worked for me like crackers, bread, soups. Don't let yourself get hungry. Eat small meals every two to three hours. I still cannot allow myself to get hungry or I feel sick. I think there was times during my first trimester that I actually got up in the middle of the night to make myself snack on a cracker or two. Also try ginger, like ginger ale or ginger snaps. It is no fun. I think I actually lost weight during that time. It will go away you just have to hang in there. I feel your pain though. I am still battling all day heartburn and indigestion.

Hi. I had morning sickness all day like you and it kept me from eating, so since I knew I needed to eat for the baby I had to do something. My doctor told me to take a regimen, as needed, of Unisom (a sleeping aid) and B6 (a vitamin) as a combination. You should ask your doctor though. I took one half of each pill together and it took care of the queaziness, but it also made me a little sleepy. So you'll have to decide how bad the situation actually is and if it's worth it. I only took it either once a day or twice a day depending on the severity. Also, I heard ginger takes away nausea and is natural. I know they've used the Unisom/B6 combo in Europe for many years and I've heard it's supposedly as harmless as tylenol while pregnant. But of course taking any kind of drug or supplement while pregnant is always questionable. But my son came out beautiful and healthy and intelligent if that helps. Good luck. J.

Hi L.,

My daughter-in-law had the same problem as you are having. She would sip on Ginger Ale, she even purchased Ginger Ale suckers online. That seemed to help her. She also would have her husband bring her a piece of toast before she even got out of bed and that helped also. She felt sick when she didn't have anything on her stomach.

When she was having the problem I read up on Ginger root and everything I read pointed toward it helping with upset stomach.

I never experienced morning sickness with either of my children (18 yrs apart!) But I did experience sickness with my second child if I didn't eat small snacks throughout the day, I had unstable blood sugar and eating small snacks helped my upset stomach as it did my daughters. I snacked on the tiny ritz peanut-butter crackers, the protein and carb together helped me. I don't remember what she snacked on.

Hope this helps you. I am 45, mother of 6 yr old boy and 25 year old son and grandmother of 10 mo. old boy. I am a home-school mom and work full time in the ministry with children at my church.

Have a wonderful day!

I had this problem with all 3 of my pregnancies. There are things your doctor can prescribe if it is too bad. I learned that I must not let my stomach be empty. I had to be nibbling between meals all the time, and had to eat something immediately upon waking up in the morning, and soda crackers did not sit well with me either. It seems odd that the thing you want least (food) is the thing that will help.

I also would keep something on my nightstand that I could eat before I even got out of bed! Ginger Snaps are good too if you like them! Also eating a protien and a carb each time you eat makes a big difference. I hope this helps! Hopefully when you get to your 2nd trimester you will feel alot better!!

Here's 3 ideas...the cheapest is to try ginger snap cookies. You might gain a few extra pounds, but ginger is supposed to really help wtih nausea. Second, Preggy Pops or Preggy Drops are citrus-flavored candy which I've heard really help some people. Motherhood Maternity stores sell them, as well as other maternity stores. The more expensive idea is a seasickness watch. I forget the brand name, but it costs around $90. You put it on your wrist and the magnet inside stimulates your nerves at the wrist, causing you to not feel nauseated (or seasick). You can search for it online. I think I got mine at drugstore.com.

I am 19 weeks preg with baby #2. When I was preg with my son who is now 2, I had hyperemsis and couldn't keep anything down pretty much the entire 1st trimester and halfway through the 2nd. After trying all the home remedies of ginger/peppermint/cola syrup/crackers/hard candy/gum/B6&Unisom... you name it, I tried it! I was prescribed first phenergran, then after that a combination of Tigan and Zofran. This time around however, I started out taking zofran from 6 weeks on, so I think it never got a chance to get TOO bad. However, I am still sick on any given day at any given time. My doctor recommended the gummy kids vitamins and I can keep them down. I would recommend calling your doctor to see about a prescription. The Zofran helps me cope and doesn't knock me out so that I can still take care of my son. Hang in there, like everyone always says... it's worth it in the end! I do think however my body isn't meant to be pregnant anymore!!! "morning sickness" is sooooo draining on both the mind and body.

I imagine you've tried taking straight "Ginger root" capsules from the health food store, but just in case you haven't I thought I'd let you know. I had terrible "all day/ all night" morning sickness and I feel your pain! I know taking these have helped a lot of my friends dramatically. So maybe it'd work for you. You can take one in the morn and one at night.
Hope it helps! V.

I read early on in my pregnancy that if you make sure you have Something on your stomach ASAP in the mornings you are less likely to be sick.
I tried this and found it to be True! If there is something you can eat that doesn't make you feel queasy-have it ready by the bed and eat it before your feet hit the floor.
Also-if you get sick easily Take your prenatal vitamins after Dinner!! (or at least on a Full stomach-I had BIG problems with taking them the way the Dr reccommended-empty stomach).
My philosophy on vitamins is if they are staying Down then they are doing what they are supposed to do-if they Aren't staying down you are receiving NO benefit from them. It's better to take them after a meal and have them stay than take them when the Dr said to and have them Not stay down.
I hope this helps!
Happy Pregnancy :-)

My daughter had all day long sickness for all 9 months. He doctor perscribed Zophran. Not sure about the spelling. That is the only way she could survive. It is very expensive and she could only take the kind that disolves in your mouth. She took it when she got up and before she ate anything. She usually took it several times a day. Ask your doctor.

My daughter had sucess with the sea bands you can get at Wal-mart or local drug store. They are used for motion sickness and look like a terrycloth sweat band. She would put them on before getting out of bed in the morning. She had the all day queasy feeling before using the bands. Hope that helps!

I was sick all the time carrying my 3 children the only thing that cut the nausea was pure coke syrup on top of crushed ice. as you drink the syrup you also chew the ice and it would knock out the sick feeling. I couldn't have lived without it I was so sick. If you are diabetic don't drink this it is very sweet. You can get this syrup from the pharmacy just ask the pharmacist they usually keep it behind the counter.

Hi...I also had incredible "morning" sickness...all day long! If there is anything that you would find mild and appealing to have at your bedside when you wake, it will surprisingly help a lot. My mother MADE me do it (she is a homeopathic nurse/doula) and it helped when I first woke up. Don't even sit up in bed before you grab something, even a little something, to put in your stomach. Believe me, it was hard for me because I have never been one to enjoy eating first thing in the morning. Ginger does help, in tea form helps a lot, also peppermint candies or gum. It is a natural remedy for nausea. When you are at home, or able, a cool rag on the back of your neck will help to calm your stomach and ease the dry heaves (if you get those). That's my suggestion! Just go with what feels right to eat when you get hungry. Your body will let you know what you need. And figure out when you feel best during the day, eat, and then take your prenatal vitamins. They made me so sick, too. Try a few kinds and you will hit on one that agrees with you...good luck! My second trimester was MUCH better.

L.,

All three of my pregnancies was like 9 months of food poisoning each time - just horrible, couldn't even grocery shop. One of the things that got me thru it the last time was wintergreen Lifesavers. Something about the wintergreen flavor calmed things down. All I can say is give it a try, it can't hurt. Good luck!

Hi L.
I know you've heard this before but I think the best approach to take is putting something in your stomach before you even get out of bed. With my last pregnancy I had terrible bouts of morning sickness, dry heaves and all, and the nausea usually lasted throughout the day until I started eating right away. I know it's not the most healthy snack but I found CheezIts to be something I could actually stomach, and I know this sounds funny but Chocolate Milk! My sister actually recommended this because it helped her with her first pregnancy. I have read that the more protein the better when it comes to staving off nausea-so maybe some nuts or a boiled egg? You will probably get all sorts of advice about different foods but the important thing is finding something that works for you and just remember, this is not a permanent condition situation.

I had morning sickness for my whole pregnancy the first time around. They put me on medication to stop me form throwing up. It is called Reglan. It did help with the morning sickness, however it had the side effect of causing my son to have no enamel on his teeth. You just have to wiegh your misery against the side effects to your child. If I could do it again I would not have taken the medication. It is a tough spot to be in, but motherhood is sacrifice in every aspect.

I just had my second child 8 weeks ago. I went through the same morning sickness symptoms as you are describing. My doctor gave me a medicine for it that really helped. On those rare occasions that it didn't I drank ginger ale and sucked on mints. In fact, I am still keeping mints in my car for stomach aches. Hope this helps you out.

Bless your heart - I know we all feel for you. Try 1/4 t of ground ginger and 1 t honey in a cup of hot water or tea. I was pregnant 3 rimes while living in Germany - mashed potatoes without butter sometimes helps. Also, nuts (hazelnuts, almonds or cashews) might help. Good luck honey and God Bless.

With my child I too had all day sickness, that is how I found out I was prego...my doctor said eat what you want when you want it and never let your stomach go empty. I could smell anything and get sick. The only thing that stayed down was Gatorade, but after a couple of months it got much better and I could get up and eat instead of having Gatorade beside me 24x7. My child too came out healthy.
Good luck.

Congrats on the upcoming baby! Morning sickness is a NIGHTMARE!!!! I was sick for about seven and a half months with my daughter, and that made up my mind that I was having no more. Of course, my son had different ideas :)

Protein, protein, protein. My midwives had me cut out nearly all sugar (and white flour) and eat a small, protein-rich snack every two hours. A half a protein bar, a handful of almonds, a protein shake (gah!), some cheese. Just something that's a good source of protein. Yes, I was sick of that word, and I try not to use the word "protein" in daily life now LOL

However! My doctor (the first pregnancy) told me to eat "whatever I could keep down" and not worry about it. And so I ate greasy, fatty, sugary foods. And I was SO DARNED SICK!!!

My midwife told me to eat lean protein, lots of vegetables and a bit of fruit and only, ever, whole wheat breads and such. I was sick from before the stick turned blue with my son, but it only lasted until I had been following the midwives directions for about two days (I was about 8 weeks when I went to see them). So now I'm a believer.

Good luck. Feel better!!!
