Morning Nap

Just wondering when a good age to drop the first nap is? My son is 9 months old and doesn't always take a "good" morning nap- sometimes around a half hour. Is this too young for this?

What can I do next?

My son is just 8 months and has pretty much stopped taking a morning nap. He sleeps well at night (sometimes 12 or 13 hours - not straight through, but only wakes to eat for a few minutes). I was really worried about it at first, but have come to expect him to really just not sleep much during the day. I feel lucky if I get one good 1 1/2 nap out of him, which usually falls in the afternoon.

It was hard for me to adjust to because my 2 year old was like a little clock when it came to his schedule... wake at the same time, nap at the same time for the same length... Amazing to me how two kids can be so different :)

Good luck to you!

My son is 14 months old and still takes 2 naps at this point MOST days. Our doctor said all kids are different and go with what works for them for the day. He said the total number of hours of sleep is what to be most concerned with. I found that once he starting really moving around during his play he was more tired. Especially climbing and walking. I probably wouldn't complete drop it yet, but I would just see how each day goes and be flexible! Good luck!

Each child is so different. You have to play it by ear (gut instinct). I have two kids, and I don't remember specifically morning naps, but my older son was done napping completely by age 2, and my younger son still sometimes needs naps at age 4 1/2. How is his temperament the rest of the day?

All kids are really different with naps and some can drop them alot earlier than other's.

I use to work at a inhome daycare and we got rid of the morning nap between 12mos. and maybe 18mos. If the child just couldn't stay awake we would let them drift off for 30min. and wake them up, and every few days we would take more time off til they were done with their morning nap. We did this because otherwise they didn't take good afternoon naps.

I know some babies that take a morning nap until 2 years old and other's who give it up at 6mos. old. It all depends on your child.

My daughter is almost 6years old and still takes naps all the time.

All of my kids took a morning nap until after a year old or so. Morning naps have usually been short. I think if he is still sleeping 1/2 hour or so, this is great. Maybe he only needs a short nap to revive a little. Sometimes a short nap is all it takes!
