"More Milk!" - Hackettstown,NJ

My daughter is 25 months and drinks a ton of milk, probablly 3-4 sippie cups worth per day. I'm wondering how to wean her off all this milk. She really gets persistent about it. Anyone else have this issue and if so, did you do anything about it?

I don't want to take her off milk, I was just trying to gauge how much is too much.

I would say that provided that her nutrition isn't suffering and she has a varied diet consuming that much milk is not an issue. That to me actually sounds like a little bit but I guess this is also me comparing it to my 5 year old who drinks 6-8.

My kids drink that and more. I don't think you should be concerned.

I find that to be, not bad.

If you are concerned ask your Pediatrician.

If she is eating other things and balanced, then I think she's fine.

For Toddlers, it is recommended to drink whole milk. Because, the "milk fats" in it is an important nutrient for brain growth.

I was told by our pediatrician that milk is only and issue when it replaces "real" food. If she's drinking milk and getting full and then not eating regular foods, then it would be a problem. (We had to limit milk because our children has weight concerns).

If it is a concern for you, you simply tell her no (or offer water instead). Yes, she may throw a tantrum or be so persistent it can drive you mad, but as long as you don't cave, she'll get the idea that she can't have milk.

Talk to your prediatrician. that's what they are there for. What size is the sippy cups? It is a 1 cupper? You should measure it out to get a good idea. Now, if you don't want her to drink so much milk, maybe just don't give her as much...give her some water in a sippy maybe...weaning is hard when it comes to everything!

As long as it is skim or low fat(but chek with your pediatrician, different kids need switch at differnt times) AND she is eating enough other food for a balanced diet, I don't see why it should be a problem...

i would say consult with her pediatrician and ensure that she actually is getting too much...it's been awhile, my son is 5. lol.

but looking a little deeper, i would make sure that she knows that "no" means "no". wherever you decide to draw the line, make sure it's drawn. yes, 2 year olds are "persistent" -they get a lot more so when they know you'll cave.

Why do you want to take her off milk?????

At this age she can have up to 24 ounces per day. She needs the fat in it plus all the other nutrients it has. If you want her to drink less anyway then offer her 4 oz. of 100% juice for a snack time drink. That is a whole complete serving of juice per day, 1/2 cup.

She can have lots of other fluids to drink like tea, water, koolaid, etc...I would make any drink mixes with less real sugar though. I make a pitcher of Koolaid and only use 1/2 - 2/3 cup of sugar. The kids love the tartness of it.

Kids at child care or preschool get milk with breakfast, milk at lunch, and often again at snack time both morning and afternoon. I did try to do juice one or other snack time during the day though. Then kids usually have milk again in the evening.

Four tippy cups are not very many for a whole day. My kids drink that much milk between the time they get home from school until the go to bed at night.
