I was just wondering if you are feeding your baby water from the tap in the Ross township area where I am from. My Dr. said that my son should be getting if possible tap water so he can benefit from the flouride in it but my ped does not live in Ross township and not familiar with its safety. So if you live out here and know about the safety of tap water, please let me know. I can always boil the tap water also and let that cool and feed that to him (mixed with his cereal) but I also heard that doing that could cause chlorine to be depleted from the water. Any suggestions would help! Thanks so much for your response.
I used the bottled "nursery" water sold at walmart and babies r us with my first son....who will be 5 soon, and so far no problems... Now I also have a 5 month old son who I am using the tap water, I live in Ross Township. And so far so good. Yes, I agree they need the flouride for their developing teeth. I am also very picky about the water I personally drink, and I think for tap water, ours is pretty good.
while working in a neonatal intensive care unit, the discharge teaching always stressed that the only water to be watchful of was well water. And even then the stress was on children who had health issues ie. premies, compromised immune systems etc. You can read any article on the internet and drive yourself crazy with alarmist talk on both sides of the story. I would not believe any website unless I read the research for my self. An article always has an agenda and will use statistics to its advantage. Anyone who has had a class on statistics will admit that you can skew any data one way or another just based on how you choose to interpret it with a statistical instrument. I more want to know how was the study developed, what was the sample size, what was the criteria for the study sample, what was the control group, what data did they find inadmissible and what were the reasons for that, who funded that study (very important for the real truth) and what journal published it. After that I can make up my own mind, not just let a watchdog site tell me what to think by only showing one side of the story. I encourage you to not be alarmed and make up your own mind intelligently. Ask your dentist, ask your doctor, get the levels from the local water authority. After you have done all that, then you can say you have made up your mind and can intelligently stand behind your decision what ever it is. Don't let anyone try to scare you into one side or the other. Then you can stand in conviction and feel good about yourself. Good luck
I live in Ross, and so does my Ped. He told me that Westview Water Authority is fine, and that we could go ahead give our baby water from the tap. He said that if we were really concerned, we could use a brita filter - they make filters that take out the chlorine and other stuff, but the the fluoride come through.
Personally, I used the brita filtered water until my little one was about 6 months old, then I didn't worry about it anymore.
Hiya! I don't live in Ross Twp., but i felt compelled to respond anyway... I have a two year old that i have been giving bottled water ever since he was born. (No special brand either.) I wouldn't drink my tap water, so i didn't give it to him. I had same concerns about the fluoride (sp.), etc. and pediatrician prescribed him fluoride drops to supplement. I no longer give them to him because i buy these little bottles with the sports cap so he can drink it himself... It has fluoride already in it.... Hope this helps!!
I grew up in Ross Twp, drinking the tap water. I'm fine. If you're seriously concerned call the West View Water Authority, since I'm sure they're your water service provider. I live in McCandless now and my 18 month old's bottles were all made with tap water and he's perfectly fine. I think tap water is more of an issue in areas where they don't treat the water or where you're consuming well water, which I don't believe is treated. I'm sure the water provider can provide you with a pamphlet that details how they treat the water though, if you're that worried about it.
We use the "PUR" filter on our faucet. That way we get the flouride, AND much cheaper and more convenient than bottled - which, I hate to have to bring up (although someone else might have mentioned htis already below) but some of those bottled brands are nothing special - they could just be tap water from somewhere else. There is not a lot of regulation of bottled water - if you google "bottled water" I'm sure you will find what I am talking about...
The thing is, though, it's not just about what the water is like when it leaves the plant - it's also about the pipes and things it's traveling though. That's why we go with the filter, and always have since our daughter was born - we've lived in places with some pretty disgusting tasting water, which makes me shudder to think why it tastes like that. :-(

My FIL is retired from the Pittsburgh Water Authority.
All water in his home is filtered.
We drink it, but limit it.
I also wanted to add that I have over time read articles about long term studies comparing our teeth and European teeth, Europe does not fluoridate their water. In time they have found that Fluoride in our water has not made a difference.
But please don't believe me -- please do the research yourself -- the documentation is out there to validate what I am saying to you.
and on a side note. We DO NOT fluoridate our children with toothpaste or allow the schools to treat them with fluoride. a BIG no no here.
