Moms Please Let Me Know What You Think
Ok,
I had my 37 week U/S today and the tech said the baby is measuring small at 6 lbs, because it could be plus one lb or minus one lb ( so that would make it only 5 lb) . But I am huge! I dont mean fat, but
at my 36 week appt the dr measured me at 38 weeks and estimated the baby to be 6.5 to 7. I had my check up done afterwards and she said she thinks the baby is atleast 7 lbs. HELP! who do i believe? The doc said i should know by this week if the u/s was normal, and if they baby is that small more testing will need to be done on the baby to see why.
I pray the drs are right and u/s is wrong.I have been on egg shells this whole pregnancy and was happy I made it to full term. I hope all goes ok.
What has your experience been? Is the U/S more accurate or the doctors by touching?

I had an ultrasound the day of my delivery and they were off on the weight estimate by over a pound. It's all just estimating I think. As long as everything else looks good, try to relax and enjoy this special time.

Both of my babies were thought to be "big". They came out at 6.13 and 6.15. I wouldn't worry too much.

Believe NO ONE! I gained 27 lbs with my son. I felt that the baby was huge but the dr. told me that "everyone feels huge at 38 weeks". The doctor estimated that my baby would be right around 7 lbs. When I delivered my almost 10 lb. baby, even the Dr. was shocked! (And my son was easier to deliver than my other 7 lb. 13 oz. baby so don't be concerned by the size if you think this will impact the delivery. 3 1/2 hour labor and delivery!) He was a healthy and happy BIG bundle of joy!
Consequently, the lady in the next room, that day, had the same doctor. Her baby was 10 lbs. 10 oz. and was told by the SAME Doctor, that her big boy would be around 8 lbs. Hmmmmm???
They say they can tell but.... I just don't know! Maybe they think you'll be freaked out, in delivery, if you THINK you will have such a large baby. Wasn't an issue with me.
Best of luck to you.

If the doc is experienced with Leopold's Maneuvers, he/she can usually estimate fetal weight to within about 1/2 a lb. Most of the old-school docs/midwives are pretty good at this - the newer ones just rely on ultrasound and never learned to do it.
Ultimately though, it sounds like everything is going great. You're near term. At this point babies gain 1/2 lb/week on average, so as long as your baby is gaining everything will be great. If your baby is not gaining they would be worried about IUGR. This would indicate that baby isn't getting good nutrition from the placenta anymore.
...But I don't know what would be considered wrong about 6 lbs at 37 weeks - that would put your baby in the 7 - 7.5 lb range at 40 weeks, which is average.
Relax and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Your baby will be there before you know it!

This is what I learned from a lot of reading during my pregnancies and from talking to the doc and nurse. Both methods rely on measurements. So if the measurement is off, then the weight will be off. The nurse told me a story of a woman that was measured by u/s and was told her baby would be over 10 pounds and she would have to have a c-section due to how small she was. They never got the chance and she ended up with 7 lbs+. I was measured at 5 lbs at around 34 weeks and had an 8 lb+. With my first pregnancy, my doctor told me that as long as everything else looks good--fluid, head measurements, organs--nothing to worry about.

U/S becoming increasingly inaccurate after 20 weeks. If you are measuring at 38, the baby most likely is at least 7lbs. Dr touch is more accurate.

Honestly I think the doctors and nurses have a secret poll to see who can be the furtheres OFF! I don't think measuring by measuring tape and your belly OR an ultra sound is accurate. I think it is just a pure guess from the experience of the techs, doctors and nurses. My sister-in-law, with her first child, went in the last week of her pregnancy for a check-up and they said the baby was measuring like 12 lbs, so they did a C-section that day, well none-the-less my niece was 8.13, still big but no where near 12 pound. Whe I had my daughter they said she was around 6 pounds my last week, well she ended up being 8.8. You reallly can't take those measurement to seriously. As long as they said everything looks good, then you will find out what your baby weight when he/she is born. Good luck and enjoy your little one!

You are doing great . Don't worry:) Your baby is plenty big. The baby will get at least another pound or so bigger by the time you deliver. The doctor knows best , don't listen to the ultrasound tech. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy . Many blessings to you !
