I am doing a classroom party for my daughter for 26 children for Halloween. I need some advise on what I can do with them for 1 1/2 hours. They are in 2nd grade - 7 year olds. I need to make some crafts and treats. Does anyone know of some short spooky Halloween books for this age range to tell a little story. I need some craft ideas, and fun things to do to entertain an or spooky for Halloween. I have to do this all by my lonesome.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all of your responses, they were all great. Does anyone know how to tell the story of Frankenstein to the 7 year old children? I wanted to use props, like the spaghetti, grapes as I told the story.

A craft idea that I just saw....using black construction paper, glue q-tips (ones with cotton on one end) to make a spooky skeleton.
Too cute!

One thing that I still remember from when I was little. Was a story that my mom told that had different props to go with it. I think the story was about Frankenstien's monster or somehthing similar. We were blindfolded and as she was describing the body parts of the monster we would feel different things. For example, peeled grapes felt like eyeballs, unpoped popcorn was for teeth, cooked spaghetti was brains. Since we couldn't see, we had so much fun trying to guess what it really was. I think the kids would love this. I bet you could find the story onine if you searched, or just make something up. Also check out family fun magazine or thier website they have great ideas. Good Luck.

Hello Angie

I make my own bingo cards at http://www.dltk-cards.com/bingo/bingo1.asp
you can have fun and think of Halloween words

you can also make your own Halloween crossword puzzles that the kids will love at http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/html/globalHome...

when I did these for my kids' class, they loved them! I also make them for Christmas every year.

If your school allows it, you can print 1 copy at home and have the school make a copy for the class.

God's Blessings

Carie R.'s suggestion of the story is excellent! I, too, did this as a kid and still remember it to this day as one of the most fun, cool things ever! Here's what I remember:

eyeballs = peeled grapes
toenails/fingernails = fritos
guts = cooked cooled spaghetti (where it is sticky and stuck together)
teeth = candy corn

As our teacher read the story, plain brown lunchbags containing the items were passed around for little hands to delve into. You can make up your own story and get creative with the food items you put in the bag.

My kids love the Hallo-Wiener - its a cute book - also I think the title is Squigley the Pumpkin - he's square instead of round and it teaches kids to be mindful of differences instead of judging.

At our preschool a mom had a ghost craft where you took black construction paper - painted the bottom of the childs foot and then made the footprint and put wiggley eyes on it - kinda cute - we changed it to a tree with ,leaves above it but it worked good and dries fast.
Have fun

Angie,

Denise already mentioned the website dltk.com and I second it!

It is a FANTASTIC website for customizing bingo cards and charts for kids. They have craft ideas with step by step directions. I can't believe the site is free. Take the time to check it out. I love printing mini-books for my twins who are in kindergarten, too.

Have fun!

Believe it or not it is easy once you do a couple of them I have an 8 year old and I did her party last year. We did Mummies, that's where we put the kids in a few teams of about 4 or 6 kids per team and we used toilet paper to dress the child(the kids picked which child would be turned into a mummy)into mummies the first team to finish won a treat! We also made ghosts out of tootsie roll pops and kleenex and little googly eyes and used rubber bands to keep the kleenex on. We played halloween bingo which we had made before the party with Halloween stickers and construction paper. Each child that won recieved a little treat. I hope this helps I'm sure that I can come up with a few more ideas if this is not enough. Good luck Hope you enjoy it!

I was just going through an Oriental Trading magazine 2 minutes ago! It's what I ordered from for my preschooler's "Fall Party". I think you can do a rush order. Ours will arrive on the 26th. I'm going to get the Christmas party crafts there too.

There is a good children's book entitled "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything" that you can memorize pretty quickly and tell or just use the book. You can have the students participate in the story by helping to make the sounds - for example - "Two shoes go clomp clomp, one pair of pants go wiggle wiggle." etc etc. Have fun :)

Hi Angie,

My daugther is in 2nd grade, we have a tradition that started after she memorized a book called "The night the scarecrow walked" This book is has very detailed vocabulary and makes it very visual to the listener. What we have done is to take it a step further, on Halloween my neighbor dresses up like the scarecrow we have in our garden and on cue 'walks' out of the garden and on his way to discover the world. Hope you can find this book I found it at a garage sale. Good Spooking !

Glue cotton balls onto construction paper to make a ghost.

Buy some mini-pumpkins and let the kids decorate them with markers/paint markers.

Hot "pumpkin" - like hot potato but with a little pumpkin

Pin the nose on the pumpkin.

Good luck!

I was going to suggest the peeled grapes and cooked spaghetti trick, too, since I also remember that vividly from a Halloween party when I was little! That should be so much fun and 7 years old is just the right age. Good luck!

When is your party? Oriental Trading has some great crafts! Otherwise you could check out books from the library (The librarians are great at picking out books for each age level) and you can do simple crafts like ghosts on a stick (lollipop covered with kleenex and secured with rubberband...then use markers to decorate the face.) Good luck!
