I was recently laid off and are left trying to survive off of my husband's income. It appears that my children will not be having a Christmas this year due to the recent event which has left us about to lose a roof over our head. Does anyone know of any charities that would help out to provide a Christmas for my children ages 7 and 14 ?

What can I do next?

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles. I would call the Salvation Army, or Toys for Tots. I know the Toys for Tots has a website that gives specific instructions on how to request toys for your children. I am sure the Salvation Army has something similar, and there are several local branches in Raleigh and surrounding areas. I do hope you have a wonderful holiday in spite of the obstacles you are facing. Please know that I am keeping you in my prayers.

Hi T.,
Do you go to church? (I ask since you specifically mention being a Christian mother). Most churches will offer some sort of help - and can probably put you in touch with other resources. You might also want to talk to your children's school counselor or social worker, as they usually know of some resources, too.

Since Christmas isn't really about receiving gifts, an alternative (and very Christian) way to celebrate would be by helping those even less fortunate than yourself. In the past I have volunteered at soup kitchens and homeless shelters - it is the season of GIVING, after all.

I wish you the best of luck... and I hope you and your children have a merry christmas - even if there aren't many (or any) presents to unwrap... t'is better to give than receive!

Dear T.,
Try going to your church, salvation army, good will or even do what I have done a few times a dollar tree Christmas. You children may be happy with that. This is a good time to talk about the true meaning of Christmas that of the birth of Jesus. How poor they were if you truly believe the Scripture.
May God truly bless you and your family.

Christian Community Foundation would be glad to help. Also the Dorcas shop in Cary on Maynard Rd. Are you looking for toys specifically?
