Ds was five weeks early and one of his testicles did not come down. The pediatricain says that this is common in premature boys and that it can some down on it's own. He's 5.5 months and it has not shown up yet.

Did this happen to any of you? Did it come down on it's own or did you have to have a procedure?
TIA!

What can I do next?

Juliana,

I don't have any children that had this problem, but my ex husband does. They did the operations to find it and they never did. He was fine and was still able to father 2 boys with having only one testicle. He should be fine.

my son wasnt premature but he did have this happen to him. His testicle didnt come down into the sack. The doctor said to wait and see about it and for the longest it didnt. My son was 2 when he had bilateral inguinal hernia surgery. His testicle finally came down after that. and he is fine now. At first after the surgery they were worried they may have to take him back into surgery to bring the testicle down but at his 6 week post op appointment the surgeron said it came down. But he was 2 when it finally came down.

My nephew had that problem. Had to have procedite at age 5, only to find out that the testicle didn't exist at all. They do say that otherwise everything will be fine, no reproductive issues, etc. Hope this helps.

A friend of mine where we used to live had a little boy who had this. He did end up getting a procedure done to correct it when he was 1 1/2. I remember they had it done at Children's hospital in Pittsburgh. They put him under and he did really well. I remember he was up and running in no time. She was so scared for him but, it ended up she said it was not hard at all.

I hope this helps.

That happened to my first son. He had surgery the day after his first birthday, if you wait till then they don't have to do extensive blood work (more sticks). He was totally fine, a in and out surgery center, and the recovery was easy. They are so young they bounce right back, he had just started walking as well and he didn't miss a beat. Wait till he's 16-18 months though since he was premature, you'll be able to relax and let him grow bigger, and then feel better about this procedure. I was told it is not really necessary till then because it may even go down on it's own before then.

My son was not premature, in fact, he was late but I had the same situation. It never came down. Around 1 year old his pediatrician sent us to a specialist. They decided to give it some more time... around 18 months we went back and it still hadn't descended so they had to do surgery to find it and see if it could be guided down. Unfortunately it was not fully formed and so they just removed it. The doctor assured me that my son won't have problems conceiving and when he is older they can place a prosthetic in there if he wants. This is ofcourse, the worst-case-scenario. But if this should be the case with your son, just know that you have another year before this is a concern and if he should need the procedure it is not that invasive and he would be in and out within hours. Don't worry!

My first two sons were not preemies, but both had one undescended testicle. I had them both checked by a urologist at Hershey Medical Center when they were 7 and 2 years old and he said it's still normal and not to worry until puberty hits.

Can you or your doctor pull it down manually into the scrotum? The urologist could do that w/ both of my boys. I guess if your son's cannot be pulled down, that may be more cause for concern, but I'm sure your pediatrician is tracking it (our ped checks the baby's "goods" at every visit).

My oldest son is now 12 1/2 and says his testicle is *always* down now (he used to be able to squat and it would come down) and says it never goes back up anymore. I haven't checked my 2nd son's in a while... guess I'd better have a look! LOL

Good luck and try not to worry too much!
