My daughter is going to be 10 in April and is despratly needing help in math. She just is not getting it. I have tried here at home making flashcards and what not, but its not sticking. I would love any recommendations of tutors. I don't want her to fall too behind and she is feeling like a bit of a failure and that she will never get it. This makes me sad because girls struggle enough with confidence issues and I am trying to bolster her up. I know she can get it, but just will need to work a little harder and with the right help. I have contacted her teacher, but surprisingly she doesn't know any tutors.
Can anybody suggest? Would appreciate it. Thanks. We are from Framingham.
It's kind of ridiculous that her teacher cannot be of more help! Contact the principal or the guidance counselor (if there is one) or school psychologist. I know of a wonderful tutor in Grafton if that would work for you. Flash cards may not work - that's more memory drill and rote learning, and it doesn't work for every child.
It's good that you're catching it quickly. I would strongly recommend the Huntington Learning centers. We sent our 18 year old nephew there. Yes 18. He'd successfully graduated from high school yet wanted to go to college and didn't have the skills. They made up a specific plan, got him caught up in almost 5 months, and he's finishing soon. Next he's going to study for the SATs. Yes, they are more on the pricey side, but they do an evaluation and it's all PRIVATE! My kids are doing well in school and yet over the summer I plan on sending them there for a couple of weeks just to review how they are doing comparatively to other kids their age and to prep them for the next grade. Even though I do a lot of math with them at home as well. I still think it's worth it.
The changes in my nephew are phenomenal. Not just in his abilities, but in his speaking skills and his confidence. I'm so happy we did this for him
Even if you can't afford the program for however long they recommend, it's still worth it to get an evaluation in case any thing is wrong or to feel that peace of mind that there isnt anything wrong.

ps. I wanted to add that I agree with the parents here who encourage you to escalate it up the chain of command. Ask to speak with the principal and the counselor. This is not your burden alone. Schools voice the idea that education is team work, so hold them to it. If that fails consider huntington.

Check with your school about teachers that tutor. I have found many teachers in the schools that tutor but do not advertise. Ask her teacher, principal or guidance for a recommendation. Good luck.

I have often seen tutors putting cards up at libraries. I would contact her teacher again and
ask for a meeting. Ask the teacher if there is any extra help available to your daughter at school. Does her teacher have a sense of what the issue is? Ask her exactly what areas does your daughter need the most help in. I think you could also talk to other parents in your school. People may have kids who see tutors but don't mention it in casual conversation. A retired teacher or maybe a friend or neighbor with an older child could be an option. Maybe working with a high school or jr. high school girl would seem more like fun to your daughter. Good luck-I have used tutors for my kids in the past and it always helped!
Call the school and ask to speak with a guidance counselor or even the secretary could probably give you some names of retired teachers who now tutor students. Don't give up until you find someone to help your daughter.
look at your local library. they always have postings for high school students looking to totor, babysit etc... i am sure you can find it there and try the schools guidance counseler if they have one, but definately start with the library
Does the Boys and Girls Club in Framingham have tutors? I'd give them a call. I'm sure they have supervised homework help and many computers with math games, but they may also have tutors. Membership is only $25 for the year!
