Mom and Baby Have Mono

I just learned I have mono. Two weeks ago my son brought what I thought was a cold home from daycare (he is 4.5 months). I got the cold and we thought it turned into strep. I was treated but still felt very tired. I went back for a checkup and they ran a mono test on me. I just learned I am positive. I called my pediatrician because I am breast feeding. They said to continue because of the antibodies Nathan is getting. He has a rash that some babies get if they have mono. We are treating it with a cream from the doctor. Has anyone else had a baby with mono? Is there anything I should worry about?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Technically I am still sick but I am doing much better. I am still very tired and do my best to rest. I am drinking grape juice. The good news is my baby is doing much better. His rash is starting to go away. Thank you to everyone for your support and advice. Now if we can just get over daycare running nose we will be doing great :)

I've never had a baby with mono but I don't think its considered dangerous in infants. In fact, the reason most young adults in third world countries don't get mono is that they were exposed as infants (by moms who masticate food for infants to eat because that's just the way it's done).

I have no advice, i just wanted to send you a hug. I hope you both feel better very soon!

My son got mono at 6 months. He had no problems but being a child that did not sleep through the night until he was 1 year old or so it sure helped me get some much needed sleep. Of course every child is different but I would say not to worry about it your son should be okay :)

My son had it, but he was 17 at the time. Actually, the biggest concern is the fact that the spleen can enlarge, and get damaged during contact sports. So long as you're both under the care of a doctor, follow their advice, get extra rest and plenty of fluids! It viral and will run it's course. A very large percentage of people come up positive when their blood is tested for antibodies for the virus, so most of us have been either exposed to it, or had a very light case at some point in time in our lives.

I had mono when my youngest was just a toddler. I was worried about him, and my other children, but the doc said that mono in young children was seldom very bad. Now for adults, that's a different story.

For you, I gotta say it is hard, but you have to rest, rest, and then rest some more. I tried to keep up with my toddler and the house work, and I just couldn't get over it. Finally I just gave up. I took care of my toddler's needs during the day, then my children came home, and I asked them to take over. They did. Then hubby came home and did dinner, and they all did the dishes. My house was a mess for 2 weeks, but I did not start to get better til I started to seriously take care of myself and rest. I mean, it was exhausting to lift my index finger, and I am not kidding. So, if you feel like you are not getting better, REST!
