Help! I was just putting clothes in the wash when I saw mold on one of my DS's shirts. I think he had gotten food on it and we must have tried to get it wet and then it ended up sitting in the hamper for a few days :( Not sure how this happened, but it's on a darling shirt and I'd hate to have to throw it out. Ideas on what to do?

Hi S.,

I have a great idea! Switch your laundry detergent. I haven't had mold or mildew in my laundry for over 8 years and loving it! Ever since I switched brands, I don't have to re-wash my clothes if I leave them in for more than a day, two days, three days or even a week!

I have a better aprreciation of this since I recently went through this this past month. When I put my order in on-line I thought I had ordered the laundry detergent and I didn't . I ran out and had to use "a defferent brand" My clothes still stink! They have a sour smell to them.

Did you know that it takes 16 rinse cycles to rinse out the chemicals of the brands on the market today! 16 RINSE CYCLES!!! YIKES!

I have used the same product for over 8 years and my son's asthma is gone, my chronic head aches are gone, life is back to normal again. Yes! Simply because I simply switched my laundry care products! Sounds corny, but when you go without them for two weeks, you really notice a difference! And you learn to appreciate the products even more!

As someone mentioned the sun will do a good job for a natural appraoch. YOu can accelerate the process if you use lemon juice too...but as mentioned it will act as an agent to remove the dye too... so if it is an item with color nearby be aware of the natural bleaching effect using lemon juice. White vinegar is another possible natural approch to getting rid of the mold.

Good luck!

Wash it and then while it's wet lay it out on the deck. The sun will bleach out the stain. Don't forget about it though or it will bleach out the shirt too. Check it every couple of hours.
Best Wishes,
J.

I have actually used Mold and Mildew killer (the bathroom cleaner type) on clothes before. I just sprayed the clothing (I think I used it on a onesie and a pair of pants) and threw it in the wash and it came out.
I would test it on a small inside spot if the clothing was very dark though, because the items I used it on were off-white with a flower pattern.

There is a product on the market that's called Back Out. I have a friend who uses it all of the time. She had a big problem with one of her cats thinking that the dirty laundry was a litter box and she would know about the transgression until a week later (YUK!). She's been using it ever since and it will take out all of that and even more. Just remember that mold will stain if you wash the item in hot water. If you use cold, the Back Out will work better. By the way, this product is all natural so it won't harm the fabric. How it works is that the enzimes will work on the stain and not the fabric and it is safe for all fabrics. If you do chance laundry soaps, get a small container first just to see if any one might have an allergy and if it will clean the way you want it to. If nothing breaks out on anyone and the soap preforms the way you want it to, them buy a bigger container.
