Mold

hi moms. I was just at a yard sale and found a portable playpen. as soon as I opened the bag to check the pieces I smelled mold. is there a way to get rid of it or should I just get rid of the playpen? I only paid ten dollars for it, so it wouldn't be breaking the bank to toss it. all comments are welcome.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to who responded. I sprayed it down completely with Lysol mildew remover w/bleach, let it sit outside for at least an hour and then completely wiped it down with HOT water. Left it outside to dry the rest of the day and 95% of the stains come out or lightened considerably. Unfortunately one end of it will not lock into position and I'll have to toss it anyway. Thank you all again. I appreciate the advice immensely.

I'd toss it! Babies put their mouths on everything, especially those top bars of the pack and plays. You don't want that baby sucking the Tilex out of the fabric!

You could always try Comet for mold & mildew or Tilex.
I had the same thing happen with my pack n' play after storing it for a while in a basement closet.

Good Luck!!

I would take it out in the yard and spray it down with Clorox water it can't hurt since you don't want to use it the way it is, it could just smell musty from being closed up but that's what I would do. You also would want to clean it even if it didn't smell bad. You will love being a grandma I do! Good Luck hope this helps.

Wipe it down with White Vinegar and see if that helps. Vinegar kills mold better than bleach.

I would wipe/wash it with vinegar and soap and water then maybe bleach it, just to make sure everything else has been taken care of.

Good luck

yeah K.; you should be able to clean it, use bleach or in fact i used to wash them with baby wipes, i had a car seat that had some mold on it and the straps would get really dirty i used baby wipes on them andit cleaned them, i would definitely take the time to wash it, and i would leave it in the sunshine a few days afterward to see if it the smell comes out , if it dont come out i may throw it away , but it could be cleaned and used, just becareful if its an older brand, it could of had a recall on it, and nothing works as good as good ole supervision, any way hope it works for yah have a good day, D. s

Hello K., Since you don't mind tossing it, first try bleaching it. Take a spray bottle and mix 50% bleach with 50% water and a squirt of dish soap. Spray out doors, let set for an hour, then hose off and dry it in the sun. If this doesn't work, nothing will. I saved a beautiful red and white dress of my daughters this way. Couldn't believe that it didn't fade the red in the slightest! We just never know. Good luck.

Congratulations on the new grandson on the way!

I personally would toss it. Mold has a way of coming back. You think it's gone, but there's still some hiding. Also, mold can cause pretty bad allergies. I certainly wouldn't put a newborn in it.

When I researched baby gear before my children were born, I read that car seats and beds/playpens are the two items that should not be purchased used.

You can buy a brand new one for $50.00 (Costco brand at Babiesrus).

Good luck.

Combination of bleach, hot water (scrub) and then drying out in the sun should do it.
