Mixed Home Pregnancy Tests Results

Dear Moms,

I am really confused. I have been trying for about 3 months now to get pregnant. I took a home pregnancy test (hpt) the day my period was due and got a very faint plus. Waited another 3 days post period to test again (7pm) - this time with a digital test. It said pregnant. My husband and I were very happy. Took the 2nd test in the pack the next morning (7am) to confirm and it said not pregnant. Just 12 hours later and no bleeding- nothing happened in between. I have read a lot about false negatives but rarely false positives. I called the company and they said It was strange as well and sent me another test. Still feeling symptoms but 2 more stick tests show negative. Am confused and really frustrated. Can't get a blood test until Monday or Tuesday but don't want to go through A doctor's visit and THEN anthother visit to the diagnostic clinic (an insurance thing) it if I am not. Still no period though and it is now 5 days past when it was due. If I had a chemical pregnancy would I at least have spotting or bleeding? Thanks for any input. I would have dealt with a negative but these mixed results are really awful. I could just sit tight and wait it out and test again in another week but if I am not pregnant I want to try again but have no idea when I will ovulate again since I haven't had my period.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

First - thanks to everyone who responded. I really appreciate the advice, experience and words of encouragement. Sadly, I did get my period yesterday and it has been extremely heavy with a lot of clotted discharge (much more than usual). I do believe that the positive tests were correct but the pregnancy didn't stick for some reason. I am sad but prefer knowing one way or the other. I did learn from the responses though to just relax and I don't think I will test until well after my period is past due the next time in order to have a better chance at a clear positive result. Thanks again - I will indeed keep trying.

The same thing happened to me.. I took a test, it said positive, then I took another one and it said negative. Bought 3 more, they said negative... Got my period 5 days later (nine days later than it was due), and it was really heavy and uncomfortable. I'm sorry you're going through that- and the not knowing either way is the hardest part; it's all you can think about.

Keep trying, good luck!!!

Oh Sweetie, Just relax and give yourself some time and then test again. In "our day" we didn't have the home test and so it wasn't as stressful.

I would think about how you feel rather than what the test says at this point. Do you think you're pregnant? Are you peeing frequently? Are your emotions all over the place? Do your breasts feel very tender? Odd bursts of energy/tiredness? None of these are foolproof, but they are pretty common early pregnancy signs. Good luck!

When we were trying for our second child I had a similar problem. I just knew I was pregnant. I took my first test the day I was suppose to start, I must have taken 6 test in the next 3 weeks that followed. I was pregnant, it just wasn't showing on the tests. The pregnancy hormones just were not strong enough to show properly on the tests. I hope that perhaps that is what is going on with you, don't give up. Good luck.

You can get false positives from hpts. I speak from experience. I had a digital one say Pregnant when we were trying for our second child. About a week or two later I thought I was miscarrying and went to the ER, only to learn it was my period! The test was inaccurate. I wouldn't believe any hpt and would depend solely on what you get from a test at a doctor's office.

Just relax...enjoy your family and trust me, you will know within the next month yay or nay for sure! Keep trying...I know this was my hubby's favorite part : - ) Stress is never good for trying or for the actual pregnancy...so just enjoy the ride!

-best of luck !

I bet you are! False positives are rare, but what's the harm in keeping on trying ;).

Good luck!

Hi K.,

I can't tell you if you're pregnant, but I can say I've been there. With my first son (so you know the result was ultimately positive) I had a similar experience. I took a pregnancy test and the second pink line was really faint, so I went to the doctor who did a test and said it was negative. For some reason I just didn't believe it And said so, so when she offered to send it to the lab for confirmation I jumped at the chance. I also had to wait over a weekend for the result and it too came back negative. I told the nurse that I still didn't have my period and had other symptoms (sore breasts, etc) and she tried to convince me that it was all in my head. 'Sometimes when we want something a lot we think we have symptoms we really don't.' patronizing cow! Anyway, I still didn't believe it. I waited 5 days, took another test and it was a clear positive. I triumphantly took it to my doctor with a big 'I told you so.' and Joe will be 3 in March.
