Is it normal after having a baby to have your period for 2 months and then be late the next? I am still nursing and have had 2 periods. I have been expecting the next one for about 10 days now. I have taken 2 pregnancy tests and they both came back negative. Has anyone else experienced this??

I just wonder how you even keep up with that with a newborn. All I know is that after I had my son it seemed like I was on a constant period for awhile. Things eventually calmed down but I think I was back at work by then. So between a new baby and being back at work and thinking/worrying about my baby while at work I really did not keep track of that at all. But I really don't think I was on a schedule again for awhile.

My daughter is 5 months old now and my period is hit or miss. I didn't have one for the first 2 months, then I had some spotting, then about a week later I had my actual period. When I do end up having a period, I have been a week or more late. It's normal. Annoying...but normal.

My cycles were very inconsistent. I had 2 normal periods, then one almost 2 months later, than 1 6 weeks after that. It was a mess.

Just be very careful if you do not want another baby right now.

Yes I was told that you wont have a period while nursing. I didnt produce enough milk to breast feed so I dont know from personal experience. You can always call the doc and ask a nurse. Congrats on your new baby.

K., It is very common to miss your period while your nursing. With my second baby, I did not have a period the entire time I was nursing and just as soon as I stopped, I started my periods again. With my 3rd, I did not get my period until about 6 months after the baby was born and even though I was still nursing, I started getting my period and it was very speratic. I might have a normal period one month and then next month I would have two periods and then maybe the next I would not have one at all and then back to haing one the next. I know that sometimes it may have something to do with how much or how little your nursing. If the baby does not each as much for whatever reason, then your body thinks you have stopped (or slowed down) nursing and you will start ovulating again which will bring on periods. I hope this helps and I would not worry about it. If you have taken a pregnancy test and its negative, then it probably has something to do with your nursing.

K.,

Yes, it is normal. My daughter was almost 11 months old before I had my first period after giving birth. I nursed her for her first year. (I actually kinda miss those days!!)

I think when you are breasteeding you do not know what to expect. I did not have one for the first 3 months after having Gracie, now I have it monthly. But it is different then before.

Yes, that happened to me. I took the test when I missed my period, it came out negative, took it 1 1/2 - 2 weeks later, and I was pregnant.
Schedule a doctors appointment w/ your OBGYN. I'm sure they can tell you for sure....

I did not have a period the entire time I nursed. That is what I was to expect. If in doubt, talk to your doctor.

Hi K.,

It's totally normal to have some differences from your normal cycle when you're breastfeeding. I just recently weaned my 9 month old twins and still haven't gotten my period back, so don't be surprised if you don't have one for a while. Talk to your doctor about getting on the mini pill (it won’t interfere with your milk supply) if you are worried about getting pregnant again so soon. Good luck to you.

I did the same with my daughter. I had a period went a few months, had it another 2 times, then went 2 months before I had it again. I am still breastfeeding.
I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is normal to be irregular.
Hope this helps.

your period will be wonky for about the first 6 months after childbirth, especially if you are breastfeeding. It's why it's so easy to get pregnant at this time, because it is impossible to tell when you are fertile and your period is gonna hit or even how heavy or light it will be...your body is resetting itself....if you are worried you are pregnant, tell your doctor and see if he will run a blood test on your hormone levels...It is far more accurate and should give you peace of mind...

Good Luck!!!

If your pregnancy test came back negative, you are probably not pregnant, but if you are worried, call you doctor. I had a similar experience. 3 months after my baby was born, my period came back, but it was very irregular. My doctor said that when you are nursing, and your period comes back it will probably be irregular.

It's normal for your period to be irregular after having a baby. I had a very similar problem. I was bleeding right away, then it stopped and I didn't get mine for almost two months and then it didnn't always come when it was supposed to, sometimes it was late a week and sometimes it was early a week. Eventually, it began to become regular, but it took some time. Hang in there. I know it's annoying, but if you think you might be pregnant, it's best to go to a doctor so they can tell you for sure. Good luck!

Hi K.,
The other mom's are right. A lot of women don't get a period while breastfeeding. My SIL breastfed for a year & didn't have her period at all for the whole time she nursed. I didnt have mine either while I breastfed my son. Everything should be fine. If you don't want to get pregnant right now, be sure to use birth control because your cycle is going to be unpredictable while you are nursing. Best of luck to you & congratulations on your baby!

I remember with my first child I bled the first month after her birth. And soon after that I would have a period twice a month and the next month it would be once and then be late the next. My OB told me it was the birth control that made my cycle all crazy. I'd buy pregnancy tests too to check just in case. Many women have told me that you couldn't get prgenant with breastfeeding (well, it didn't work for my body). Perhaps your cycle has been off track due to things happening in your life.

My period was really inconsistent while breastfeeding, especially with my first one when I started my period earlier (when he was 4 months, as opposed to 11 1/2 months with my 2nd and 3rd). Like you, I was taking pregnancy tests like crazy because I was worried that I was pregnant again. Good luck!

There really is no normal pattern if you're still nursing. A late period isn't necessarily anything to worry about. But if you're not planning on getting pregnant again soon, you should consider birth control. Nursing will not prevent pregnancy. Your periods may remain off schedule for a few months after you stop nursing.

I delivered my son in January and after the initial heavy bleeding was over, I spotted until about early April. Six weeks after I delivered I went on the progesterone birth control pill that they give you when you're nursing. I've been nursing my son all along and still continue to do so. Ever since around early April, I've not had any bleeding or spotting whatsoever, not even after the few times I forgot to take my pill.

I echo those who've said there's really no normal pattern after you have a baby, especially while nursing.

Good luck!

Hi! The other two are right, your fertility is wonky due to mixed up hormones after birth, especially while breastfeeding. Were you supplementing (with formula?) or pumping more often then nursing? That can cause you to start early, especially if you are doing that and then go back to nursing. I think with my third when I had to give her formula (she had no poopy diapers for several days, and she was a newborn) my period started quickly. But then I was able to phase out the bottles and nurse exclusively and my period stayed away until she was 11 months old. :) I got pregnant two months later.

As far as child spacing is concerned, my oldest was 5 months old when I got pregnant with #2 and me second was 6 months old when I was pregnant with #3. But I was bottle feeding. One year apart was fun, I enjoyed it. The next two are 23 months apart and I breastfed exclusively to 6 months, nursed to 13 months.

S., mom to 5 and lovein it!

I've nursed two babies and I can tell you that it is very normal to not have a normal period while you are nursing. I nursed my second child for a year - it was four months before having my first period, then a month and a half before I had my second period. I wouldn't worry too much about it, although if you have serious concerns, it never hurts to call your doctor's nurse and ask her opinion.

Hope this helps!

Yes it is normal to do this. If it continues for another couple of months you need to see your doctor. I know I did when I had Tyler.

Dont worry I did this to when I had my son 5 years ago and then with my daughter 2 1/2.

This is very common as I am sure you have had other feed back.

It is due to your nursing you may not have one at all,or it will be here and there. So dont freak out and take more test in less there are other signs.

Best advice just becareful and protect yourself if you arent reayd for another baby.Because you can get prego again when you are nursing. Your Hubby will thank you too once he gets over having to use a cover.

Your Normal!
