Miscarriage?? - Keller,TX

May 8th was my last period. On June 2 I found out I was pregnant. Follwoing week I went in for blood work. Preog 15 (was put on progesterone supp) and HCG 40. 2 days later went for repeat blood work and HCg at 80. Following week 200, and then 417 a week after. On June 21 I started spotting, nothing located on ultrasound, and HCG decreased to 200. Was told I had a miscarriage. I spotted lightly. No cramps, no clotting or tissue passed, nothing. I still feel very pregnant. Is this normal? is there a chance I could still be pregnant? Does bleeding in combination with decreased HCG automatically mean miscarriage? I feel delusional for asking these questions but I feel like I need some medical advice. Please help.

What can I do next?

I'm sorry - even if I was in the medical field - I would not evaluate you over the internet. You really need to talk with your OB/GYN and have them re-take the blood test.

It's POSSIBLE you had a blighted ovum...that's where a fertilized egg does NOT develop - however - hormones show growth - there's no baby. They saw nothing on the ultrasound - which was done at 6 weeks - which is a tad early and an egg sack should be seen - IF they did it trans-vaginally and not from the top/uterus view.

You could have had a chemical pregnancy. I don't know. PLEASE go back to your doctor and have a blood test done to see where your hormone levels are now.

These sound like good questions for a medical professional. Good luck.

HCG levels do not drop in the first trimester. If you still have the HCG hormone in your system, you may still feel pregnant. I have personally had 7 miscarriages. Once the levels start to decrease, the pregnancy will not progress. I'm assuming they did an trans-vaginal ultrasound at 6 weeks to find the location of the sac and possible heartbeat. If no sac was located it was probably a chemical pregnancy.

As the other poster said, you need to make sure the levels go to 0. I would think your OB would require you come back for another blood test.

I am so very sorry for your loss. It is very hard to have this happen. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Decreased HCG automatically means miscarriage. I guess in the case of a "vanishing twin" you *could* technically still have a viable pregnancy remaining if you lost one, but I don't think with a twin you would've had HCG levels that low.

I can tell you this...... personally, I have had 3 miscarriages and 1 ectopic pregnancy. The one I had that included progesterone *support* made the miscarriage a million times worse. It took WAY longer to naturally pass the embryo and my body took MUCH longer to "actually" miscarry and then MUCH longer to recover.

The progesterone thickens the lining of your uterus. It's purpose is for you to not miscarry. So, it will hold onto the tissue as long as you take progesterone.... you take progesterone so your body WON'T shed the lining of your uterus, even when it SHOULD.
The miscarriages without progesterone were simply a HEAVY period. (8, 12 and 10 weeks) the one with progesterone was much worse.
The one WITH progesterone took longer to start (by 2-3 weeks) and lasted longer.... I bled for about 4 weeks. And it was quite clotty. I don't mean to be too graphic.

As others have said..... we are not medical professionals, so I would encourage you to talk with your Dr sooner rather than waiting til Friday. However, I would say based on my experience, that with declining HCG there is no way you have a viable pregnancy.

I am sorry for your loss.

As someone else said, the progestoerone is why you still feel pregnant and haven't passed tissue. Progesterone supplementation can help prevent miscarriage is the embryo is viable, but nothing can help if it simply isn't viable. My good friend had a miscarriage with her first pregnancy, so her OB/gyn gave her progesterone during her second pregnancy, and she had a missed miscarriage between 10-12 weeks-- no obvious signs of a miscarriage, but the doctor discovered that the baby had died. Happily, my friend is now 36 weeks along in her third pregnancy, and all is going well.

I am very sorry for your loss, and hope you can get all your questions answered on friday.

Definitely follow up with your OB. Chances are the miscarriage is not complete which is why you are still feeling pregnant. Your doctor needs to make sure your HCG gets back to 0 before you can start trying again and all is cleared out. I've had 2 and while one passed on it's own, the doc still had to go in and clear some tissue out. The other I just had a D&C so I could move on and start trying again. I actually recommend the D&C for that reason. I am very sorry for your loss and know it is hard to understand. But know that they are very common and I am sure you will have the baby you want soon!

It sounds as if you had a chemical pregnancy where your body thought it was pregnant due to a rise in pregnancy hormone, but it wasn't actually pregnant. And the only reason you believed you're pregnant is because you took a pregnancy test. That's why when you went to the doctor so very, very, very early, it was just too early to see anything except a sac... but there wasn't one.

This is why any OB/GYN worth their salt will make patients wait until a MINIMUM of 8 weeks before they test for pregnancy in their office, and 10 weeks before they do an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. We use the home tests far too early, and they test ANY amount of hcg... even what's normally present in our bodies around the time we have our periods.

The issues you're having now are because of the Progesterone. I do hope you've been to the doctor.

My heart goes out to you. I experienced the same as "CoMoMom". Please do opt for the D&C and don't go the "natural route" which is tramatizing and after going thru it you may STILL have to have the D&C. Plus it gives the doctor an opportunity to really 'clean up' so you have the best chance possible the next try.

I just hope that you aren't discouraged from trying again. And for any women out there who have gone thru this multiple times... and wondering whether to go on, please do try again, and again, and again if you need to because when you DO have a viable pregnancy... it can all go wonderfully and you'll have a full life with your child(ren). I was pregnant 9 times with one full term amazing daughter. I'm so glad we kept trying. Miscarriages hurt, but if you do eventually have a child or adopt, the journey is all worth it.

Take care... hang in there...
