Mirena IUD - Columbus,IN

I have had a Mirena IUD in for 2+ years. For a few months I have been experiencing anxiety attacks, hot flashes, night sweats, and waking up around 4 am and not being able to get back to sleep, but I am still very tired so I don't want to get out of bed. I found a couple websites about side effects. Has anyone else had this experience and if so did you decide to leave it in or have it removed? I've also heard that if it is removed you can experience a "crash", where the symptoms are worse for 2-3 months.

Thanks for any advice/opinion.

I had mine removed a little over a year ago after having issues with extreme (we're talking Incredible Hulk here) anger. I had it in for a year and had no problems related to withdrawal after it was out - as far as I can tell. I am still moody, but nothing like that heightened craziness.

Hi, I just want to say that your not the only one. I had my Merina IUD put in February of 2006 and February of this year I had mine removed. I had all the symptons you described plus some. I had been put on a couple different pills for the anxiety that never seemed to help had my Thyroid checked three times in two years, was put on a CPAP machine for the sleep, and all kinds of tests that always came back negative. My Ob claims that the Merina could not possibly be what had caused all my symptons. And as you I had found numerous websites with women in the same situation. I have had my merina out now for 2 full months and I can not beleive how much better I feel. Now I realize that all women are different and that we all react differently to med's. But I believe that the Mirena is what caused MY problems. I wish you the best of luck! God Bless!

I work in a Ob-Gyn office. I don't know that this is related to your IUD. Have you had your thyroid checked or do you have a current thyroid problem allready. All these symptoms sound like they could be your thyroid. Before having your IUD removed i think you should see your PCP and have other things checked. This could easily all be fixed by a small dose of medicine. Good luck and I hope you get to the bottom of things soon.

I do not have any advice yet but could you answer a question for me? What site did you find these side effects for Mirena on? I researched this alot before I had mine done after baby #4, insurance covered it and I felt comfortable with the level of protection and the fact it was not permanent.
I have struggled with panic attacks in the past and have had no problems w/o medication for over 2 years now. Last night I had hot flashes and felt anxious and could not get to sleep.

I researched the Mirena IUD after I had my second son. My OBGYN said that 20% of women have pretty bad symptoms and have it roomed soon after having it put in. It sounds like the hormones are too strong and you are having bad reactions. People can also have allergic reactions to the copper or other substances the IUD devices are made from. If you experience a crash or the symptoms persist after removal, your OBGYN should be able to prescribe a hormone treatment temporarily and gradually ween you off the meds as your body regulates. I'm sure you don't want to spur menopause or pre-menopause any earlier. I definitely suggest having that looked into with a doctor or internist if your OBGYN is not familiar with the symptoms.

Hi, I don't know how old your are, but if your in your mid to late 30's you might also want to research a bit on perimenopause.

Symtoms include "irregular periods, heavy bleeding, hot flashes, sleep disruption, headaches, dry eyes, vaginal changes, hair loss, weight gain, loss of libido or extreme emotional distress" the inside quote is from a perimenopause website.

Good luck to you, L.
