Mirena IUC and Pregnancy???

Has anyone else out there had any experience with Mirena IUC? I had mine put in last october. I have had my period like clockwork since then until now...I havent had one since Jan. 16th. I took a home test on monday which was negative. Now I know that it can cause you to totally stop having periods but I was told that wouldnt happen until about a year after i had it placed. Also I know that it can cause irregular bleeding as well but i havent had any, I have been more regular than ever!! I guess being a mother of 4 I am a little apprehensive when I dont get a period!! Especially since two of my children were conceived while I was on the pills. A lot of my concern also comes from the fact that my Dr. inserted it and said see you in a year for a check up....well the mirena website says you need to have it checked 3 months after insertion to be certain of proper placement. I have an appointment with a new OB/GYN on wednesday to check placement and redo a pregnancy test. I know that more than likely I am not but the what ifs are driving me crazy!! I dont know if i will make it till wednesday!! So any input would be greatly appreciated!!

What can I do next?

I had this IUD inserted last September after giving birth in May. I had a very slight amount of spotting in October and NOTHING since. No period, no break-through bleeding and no spotting. I love it. I did have a follow up with my doctor 6 weeks after having it placed. A co-worker has had about the exact same experience. And, she had a follow-up 6 weeks after as well (we have different doctors) Hope this helps!
I know they say the period eventually goes away after a year, but, I was pleased it did not take that long to kick in...I guess everyone is different, but, it has been my experience that most of the people I have talked to - it did not take a year for their period to stop.

When I first got my Mirena IUD I remember thinking,"I thought my periods were suppose to end when I got this." My periods were longer than ever and regular but sure enough about 5 mo into it they got shorter and shorter. I have not had mine for a year yet and they are usually a day long and some months I don't even have one. It is a good idea to get it checked and to get a test done just to be safe.

I've had mine in for 3 years now & if you're one of the lucky ones you'll NOT get your period anymore while having the Mirena IUD. I rarely rarely get my period anymore & very happy I chose the Mirena.

I had mine inserted last May and since November, I've only had a couple of periods and they've been pretty light. My Dr. told me that generally, you stop having periods after a year, but for some women it's before and for some it's a little longer. I was also scheduled for a 3 month checkup after insertion. You are probably not pregnant, but definitely go to the dr to check the placement. Good Luck!

I had the mirena IUD put in 12 weeks after I had my second child which is exactly a year ago. I LOVE IT. I did spot for several months after having it put in but soon after rarely have had a period at all. My sister in law though has only had hers for a few months and doesn't have period at all but spots all the time. So do not be alarmed. My husband I use no protection and I am EXEREMLY fertile. It is 99% effective. I was told by my dr that getting pregnant with an IUD is HIGHLY unlikly and that he has only seen it once in his practice which he has been around a while seeing as how he delivered my sister 18 years ago`.

I had my Mirena IUD for 20 months and loved it...until I got pregnant. I am due anyday now with that baby. It does happen. I checked my strings every month and when they removed it, it was right where it was supposed to be. Since this has happened to me I have found out that I am not alone. There are a few others out there who it didn't work for. 99.9% is a good percentage...but not foolproof.

Hello,

I have the Mirena IUD, and went through the same thing you are going through until yesterday. I have had it for almost 2 years, and my periods had been very regular..maybe light but regular. Then, I realized I was over a week late a few weeks ago.. I ended up taking a pregnancy test a few days ago, and it was negative.. and then I started my period yesterday. I think I starting having pregnancy symptoms, because I was worried about it. My Dr. tells me to check the "strings" of the IUD every month.. but I never do that. I had already decided if I was pregnant it would be a miracle baby since the IUD is like 99.9% effective against pregnancy.

You are probably on the same boat as I am, and will start shortly. I actually went to the Dr. a few days before I took the pregnancy test..and I know they would have told me if I was PG since they test your urine.. but I was still determined I was PG and bought a test.

I am hoping this is a one time deal and I don't go through this every month now.

Good luck!

Hi there. I also have the Mirena IUD. I have had mine for a little over a year and I became more regular when I got mine, also. Then I started just barely having my period...sometimes it's just a little trickle for a day. I did have to go back three months after and have it checked, though. Hope that helps...

I have the Mirena IUD and I stopped having periods within a few months of having it put in. I spotted once a month and had cramps every now and then- I also had all the moodiness of my period, I just didn't bleed anymore- which is good, but very weird at the same time. I have had mine in for 2 years now and have not had any trouble with it. I understand your worry because my daughter was conceived when I was on the patch. I would go to the doctor and have them check it out just to calm your fears, but hopefully I have helped some!
