Hey ladies, I have a question to throw out there about Mirena. I just had one fit this afternoon. The booklet the DR gave me said possible side effects after placement including pain and bleeding, and if these do not go away within 30 mins to call the provider.

ok, so I had no side effects at all except for some slight cramps on and off all day (she told me to expect that, but to call if they got more intense instead of less over the next 24 hours) until 4 hours later. Now I'm having some light bleeding. I was definitely not bleeding before, and this is fresh blood now.

so is that fairly normal? or should I call first thing in the am? it seems like it would be normal, but the booklet doesn't mention it really one way or the other.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the reassurance! The bleeding tapered off that evening and it's just been some light pink to brown spotting since then. But based on your replies, I won't be surprised if I have more spotting. Thanks again!

I would first recommend calling your DR and asking about it just to be safe but if you aren't having very painful cramping I wouldn't worry about it to much. I had my Mirena placed 6 weeks after having my son and i bled for about one and a half weeks or so. (But i don't know if it was because of having a baby or because of the Mirena). I have now had it in about 2 years and no problems at all I luv it. Good Luck!

I bled for about 4 days, then I called my OBGYN and they perscribed me some motrin for the cramping and bleeding. I had to take it for a week straight and havn't had a period in 3 years!

My Dr. told me that light bleeding was normal- but if there were any clots or anything that was heavier than my normal period to give her a call. I've had it in for about 5 months now and haven't had any bleeding since the spotty stuff for the first couple of weeks.

I had slight bleading for a day or so..and spotted on and off for the 1st year. Then after that had like 1 period a year. I loved that part of it :) You could call them in the am but I think it's fairly common....

I have had Mirena in 4 years now and not a single complication. It's normal to have some cramping an bleeding with any procedure like that however for me it was a simple as forgetting it was even there by the time I left the dr's office. Always call your DR with any medical concern but to me it sounds like you are simply experiencing the normal side effects. HTH.

I had one put in about a month ago for the first time too. I went through the same thing and it took a good three weeks for the bleeding to subside. For the first week or two the flow seemed surprisingly heavy to me. So I'd say that what you're experiencing is pretty normal. But I'm no doctor, just keep an eye out for the flow getting really heavy and/or you start passing blood clots. If you're not sure just give your doctor a call. Good luck.

Very normal, you can bleed for quite some time after insertion. I bled for 35 days. (Fun - not) Good luck!
