Hi Mamas,
I know this question has been asked before but I can't seem to find it to see people's responses so here goes: I am due in a little less than 5 wks. I am going to have to go back on birth control because my hubby isn't sure he wants the big "V" word...so therefore, I am trying to figure out what I want to do. I don't want to be tied down to a pill, but also when reading the Mirena pamphlet, it seems that there are some serious cons about it. I would love to hear your experiences (good or bad) with it so I can make an informed decision about it. I have talked to my midwife about it, but it's always great to hear from the people who've been there and done that. Thanks much :)

I have had a Mirena for 9 months, and I love it. I no longer get my period, just a few days of spotting every other month. I never have to remember to take the pill and have no complaints! It made me feel like I had a slightly upset stomach for about the first month, but then I was fine. And I am not convinced that the feeling was related to the Mierna :) Good luck!

I don't know much about he mirena accept that it uses hormones.
I am on my second IUD, I had one baby between (13 years apart), I got pregnant within two months of having it removed. It is the ONLY BC that worked for me. I have NO side effects.
I love my IUD, maybe explore other IUD choices besides the mirena?

Hi! I've had the Mirena for about 8 weeks now and haven't had a real bad experience! I still never know when I'm getting my period... the first few weeks, I kept spotting for almost 3 weeks. The DR assured me it take a while for my body to get used to it. But other than, everything is fine! I don't even know it's there. So hopefully in the next few weeks my period will be predictible.
OH and make sure your insurance company covers it! I was under the impression that mine was covered, but it wasn't! So I probably wouldn't have gotten this if I had to pay for it out of pocket! But It's been working for me!
Good Luck and Congrats on the new baby!

I have the Mirena. I have had it for about a year and a half. At the beginning I was nursing my newborn and I was still bleeding. When you nurse you tend not to bleed. I did with the Mirena for a few months. You are not supposed to get your period while you are on it, but I do randomly have spotting and once a full period. That is my only complain. It seems to be working, no babies.
As far as having it put in, it is a little uncomfortable, I had to have it done twice because the first one broke. I guess having it break is rare. The day it was put in I had cramping but not to bad, kind of like a period. My sister also has it! She had the same symptoms. I do not think she had a full period though, just spotting occasionaly.

If you have any more questions, send them over!

I don't have a Mirena. After needing 2 years of fertility treatments to conceive the first time, my body sorted itself out and I had 2 natural conceptions after that, so I was reluctant to do anything hormonal and possibly mess things up again. Also, I did a lot of research about it, and discovered that one not too uncommon side effect is ovarian cysts. I have a history of 3 different kinds of ovarian cysts at this point, so I decided that it would probably be a bad idea for me. If you have a history of cysts, you might want to keep looking.

I have had the IUD for over a year now and I have had no problems-in fact, my period is barely anything now which is great. I love not having to remember to take a pill everyday and the procedure was quick. Not to mention a $$ saver as my insurance had upped my pill to $35 a month out of pocket-I paid nothing for the procedure except my $20 copay and that was it.

J.--

I have two children and am pretty sure that I'm done since I have one of each...but neither myself or my husband were interested in doing anything permanenet yet either so I had Mirena installed! And love it. No issues that I can really express or attribute to the Mirena itself. I gave birth to my daughter in April and have been exclusively nursing since then, so I believe that the Mirena supports that beautifully if you plan ot nurse at all. I haven't noticed any real change in my milk supply and haven't had a clogged duct or anything like that. I had the device placed around 8 weeks post delivery, had minor cramping for a few days, minor spotting and since then, not a negative to report. I had previously been on the shot and loved it, but it's been found to affect calcium levels in your bones so that wasn't an option for me with the nursing. And it's good for 5 years and it's no fuss! Like I said, I love it. And no change to my libido or anything like that so I wouldn't be too concerned. You can always have it removed and insurance companies cover most of the cost so it's pretty much a win win.

Good luck with the baby and your decision!

I have a 7 month baby girl and I've been using Mirena for about 4 months now. I love the convenience of not having to think about and the fact that I haven't had my period for months. The only thing that I can complaint about is that my husband does feel the strings although I had it trimmed down a couple of times. He says it doesn't really bother him but he can definitely feel it. It doesn't bother me. Other than that, it's been great. With the baby and my 2-year old son I can use all the convenience that I can get.

I've also seen a pamphlet for an implant at the doctor's office that looks like a coil that gets placed in our tubes. I read very little about it because it is a permanent solution and I'm not prepared to make that choice at this time. That is something else to consider.

Good luck with your choice.

I got mine a little over a year ago. For the first 9 months or so it was fine. But soon after I stopped breastfeeding, things started to go a little wonky. I'm not sure all of my symptoms can be contributed to Mirena, but they are side effects I have read about that seem to occur in more than 5% of users. Here they are: far worse PMS than I ever experienced before, severe cramps, almost constant nausea (one month I was convinced I was pregnant!), nervousness, insomnia, depression, and decreased libido. I have long strings (another response said that was a good idea), but I'm not crazy about them. My husband still feels them, even when he "tucks" them away to the side like my midwife suggested. And they poke ME! Sure, I can move them around, but its not really something I can do when out in public and they start bothering me.

I'm having mine removed in a few weeks. If I could have it done today, I would. I don't think my experience is typical, but I don't think its uncommon either.

Hi J.,

After my daugther was born, we were uncertain when we would have another so I decided to go on Mirena. I think it's the best decision I could have made. It does take about 4 months to get regulated but after that it's a breeze. I was on the pill before I had my daughter and I was always forgetting to take it, with Mirena I never have to think about it - ever!

Congrats and good luck!

I would definitely recommend the Mirena IUD. I am on my second one. No real pain going in or coming out other than just a tiny bit of an uncomfortable pressure that only lasts a split second. I got pregnant within 2 months of having my first one removed. My periods are very light. My husband has even offered to get a vasectomy, and I told him not to bother because I'll just keep getting the Mirena every five years because the benefits are that great. The only downside I can see is the upfront cost. All insurance companies are different, but I'm sure it works itself out over time if you would have to pay for something else anyways. I believe the total cost without any insurance coverage is about $250-$300. Good Luck!

hey. im on Mirena. there are a lot of positives and few negatives in my book. but let me start from the begining,

when i was pregnant my sister told me that she is on Mirena. she told me a little about it and i decided that i wanted it. its so much easier than taking a pill or doing NuvaRing because NuvaRing you still have to take out and put in. with this birth control i am totally free from forgetting.

Positives: i love Mirena because it makes my life all the more easier. i dont like to take medication every day: i dont even like taking medication for a head ache, so i dont want to risk forgetting about my birthcontrol and end up with an unexpected miracle. lol. i dont have to think about it. i dont have to worry about it. i dont have to remember it. plus your doctor checks on it every 6 months to see if its moved at all. which is usually unlikely. when they put Mirena in, it doesnt hurt, it feels more like pressure, a little uncomfortable.

Negatives: different women bleed for a different amount of time. as for my sister, she bled for 4 months after her daughter was born. 6wks after birth, then about 2 months after mirena was put in. i actually had bled for 6mo after birth (on and off). so if you can stand your period then its okay. and like i said, every woman is different. and its totally worth it. one other negative is that if you are having unprotected sex, your partner sometimes may feel the string from Mirena. it may be a little uncomfortable.

i love Mirena, and so does my husband. because with a new baby, you wont really have time to remember what day you put what where (NuvaRing), or remember if you took your morning pill. the first thing you do when you wake up (even before you pee) is run to your baby.

i would completely suggest Mirena

I have had it for a year now and I love it! I took the pill for over 7 years before I had my son. I love the freedom of not worrying about the pill not to mention the savings ($175 vs $50 a month). There are risks like with any birth control, but it was worth it. It is a painless procedure especially after having a baby. I get a lighter period or no period at all. If you don't want to have another baby or put off having another for a while it is a better choice than any of the other birth control especially since it last five years! Good luck with you baby and your choice!!

Hi J.!
I had the Mirena put in six weeks after my second was born and I have had no problems. I rarely get my period and when I do its usually for a day or two. I really like it and am glad we chose to use it-in prob a year or two we will have it taken out and try again-hopefully then we dont have any side effects :) The only con my husband says is he can feel it (sorry tmi) just make sure your doctor doesnt cut the strings too short-tell her to leave them long! Hope this helps if you have any other questions let me know!!

Hi J., You are right to be concerned. I just had my Mirena removed last week- was placed after I had my 2yr old baby girl. I don't think this happens to everyone on Mirena but I will share with you my experience which lead to removal. I had recurrent yeast infections/Bacterial vaginosis while on Mirena after I had to take antibiotics for a sinus infection. Come to learn that it is a pretty common recurrence with Mirena. Also I noticed a nose dive in my sex drive after about 2 months on it. These are the cons that lead to My husband and I decided to have it removed.
