It looks like you got some good tips. I just wanted to add that you need to make it clear to your son to only get things off the official site, not third party sites and bit torrents, because sometimes those mods contain viruses.

Here is the answer from my son:

To apply a skin, first you go on to google images and search for a skin (darth vader minecrat skin for example). You download the image (it should be a .png that looks like a seemingly random arrangement of pixels), then you go onto minecraft.net and then log onto his account. Once you log in, at the top of the webpage should be an icon that says, "Profile." Click on it, and it will take you to a another page. On that page there will be a section that says, "Change Skin" and under it there should be a button that says, "Change how you look in Minecraft." click on it, and it will open one of those file search menus and then you just select the .png that you downloaded. Then click "upload." In a couple of seconds, it should say, "Your skin has been changed."

Downloading mods however, is not a straightforward process. It varies from mod to mod, and installing them usually involves delving into the game files, which, if done incorrectly, will mess up the programming. It won't ruin the game, you just have to re download the game files, which is free and easy. There are many how-to videos for each mod usually, though to spare yourself frustrations, I would not recommend attempting to install mods without a tech savvy person to monitor the process.

There are all sorts of you tube videos specific to Minecraft that show how to do a lot of this stuff. My son plays all the time and uses the videos to learn how to do different things in Minecraft.

They are crazy hard and can mess up the game. My son has a couple but he spent weeks trying to figure it out, where I had failed multiple times. If you can finds someone with some computer knowledge that was best.

I have helped my 10 yo son get mods and texture packs, some have worked and some have not. Each one has a different set of instructions for mac or Windows, we usually find them by googling (Mod Whatever for Mac) and wind up on a You Tube page where someone shows it all step by step. Follow their links in the Show More Information section below the video window, to get the files you need. Then write down all their steps and follow them. But first you may want to scroll down into the comments -- if most people are saying "This doesn't work!" then it probably won't work.

The trouble is that Minecraft itself is getting updated a lot, the mods are built without new updates, it is complicated and not very reliable.
