Milk Question? - Argyle,TX

Hi moms,
I am feeling a bit clueless about milk!
We have been buying Horizons milk for the last year or so but it is so expensive! I spent the last hour playing online trying to learn what makes it so much better than Schepps or Braums or any of the brands that advertise that they don't use the artificial growth hormones but I still haven't figured it out. If anyone knows why the Horizons is worth the price tag, please let me know! Or if you know why one brand is better than another-really any info will help. We go through so much milk every week & the last thing I want to do is put harmful hormones into my little boy!
Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

Deans half gallon carton container doesn't use growth hormones...usually you can get Deans at Tom Thumb....just found that out a week ago. The only drawback is you have to buy the half gallon container, but it is still much less expensive.

My doctor has never said to use a certain brand. It is all personal preferance. We go through so much milk as well, but were always told to keep our little boy on whole milk. I am now buy Braums for the fact that their's is cheaper, does not tast bad, they use keep their cows in a well maintained, controlled and stable environment and from what they say they don't use the hormones that others use.

I highly recommend Braums-tastes great and is great for you.

We've always bought organic; however, I've recently started using Braums. They have their own private herd and it appears they are raised in a more healthy environment. They also don't use the hormones and antibiotics which are what really concern me in milk. I've actually read that Horizon uses dehydrated milk in their products and that, among the organic companies, they treat their cows the worst. So when I do buy organic, it's usually not Horizon now. Last week, I just picked up 2 1/2 gallons at Braum's for the same price or less than what I'd pay for Horizon. If I'm out and have to go to the grocery store, I will buy an organic brand. But if I can take the time out, I will go buy Braum's now.

Kristin,

The organic milk is a lot better for your baby in the long run.
With that said, it is going to be more expensive.
But, like another mom said, try buying by the gallon instead of the half gallon.
Also, at our Kroger, they mark down the Horizon gallons two days before their expiration date.
So if you go to the grocery store a couple times a week, check the Horizon gallons, and sometimes you'll find some that are marked "Manager's Special".
We go through more than a gallon every two days, so buying it that close to the date is not a problem for us.
Just a thought!
Good luck!

Hi Kristin,

When you get some free time, check out this web site:

This might help you understand why organic milk and other organic products are worth the extra money.

Hi Kristin.

I love, love, love Horizons milk but you're right, it's very expensive...so I never do buy it to keep in the home. We generally use Schepps or the store brand. My daughter likes them all the same it seems so it's worth it for me to save the extra couple dollars per week. If only we could get our hands on some good Horizons milk coupons! I guess Horizons just costs more simply because it's organic.

Target now has an organic brand of milk and many other organic things. I like the Archer Farms milk. Hope that helps.
