Hi Everyone,
I know I am thinking ahead, but that is what I do. My son is 6 months old in a few weeks. He has a milk protein allergy. Does anyone know any good milk protein free ( whey, casean, any milk products) free cake or cup cake recipes that I can make for him for his birthday or purchase from somewhere? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Is it a tested allergy? The only reason I ask is my son didnt tolerate milk formula so he had to go soy but nothing else bothered him and he outgrew it by the time he was one and was able to transition to cows milk.

otherwise if its a true tested allergy I notice quite a bit at plum market that is milk free you will have no problem finding something! you could bake from scratch too :)

Hi E.,
My son had/had a milk protein allergy too. When he had is blood tested as a baby, it showed he was extremely allergic. They told us to wait until age one to try him on regular milk because babies/kids tend to outgrow it. They also said the less exposure he has to milk, the better chance he has to outgrow it. I stuck to no milk until he was one. At one years old, we tried the milk and he broke out in hives and threw up as he did when he was a baby. Anyway, since then and since it is not life threatening, there have been occasions when he has had some things with a little bit of milk in it, and cake has been one of them. He has not had even a single hive or upset stomach from it. There are alot of other things with a little bit of milk in it that he has had also that he shows no signs of allergy to. They told us to try again when he is 3 (he is 2 1/2). It has been months since I have even seen 1 hive on him, so I think he may have grown out of it, but who wants to test and see their child sick if not. Anyway, I am not sure the extent of your son's allergy, but I just thought I'd let you know in case you thought by 1 years old he may be growing out of it and want to try regular cake. I usually just take the frosting off.

Kroger has a cake mix that they sale. Its in the cake aisle right past the regular cake mix. I think its Cherrybrook Farms. They have a cake mix, frosting, brownies and cookies. Its like $4 a box but its worth it for the little ones with the allergies.

My son (almost 1 now) has that allergy. Duncan Hines makes quite a few cake mixes and frostings with no dairy at all. That's what I have lived on the past 11 months since I breastfeed. The yellow cake and the buttercream frosting are good choices (white has dairy).

My son is allergic to eggs, milk, and peanuts. I use Duncan Hines yellow cake mix (I mix it with a can of cream soda, since my son can't have eggs)...top with vanilla or chocolate Duncan Hines frosting. Double check the ingredients on your frosting cans and cake box - their butter yellow cake contains milk. But I do know they have cake & frosting that is safe.

Cherrybrook Kitchen's makes a safe mix, too....it's just not as good as 'normal', though. You can also make your own frosting...subsitute vanilla soymilk when it calls for milk in the mix.

E., I use the Better Homes & Gardens cookbook and there are lots of options. Carrot cake, apple cake banana bread (with or without nuts). We don't have a milk allergy but I like baking with fruit and I rarely use frosting.

How did you find out that your son has a milk protein allergy? Is this something that is found in formula?

Anyhoo - you have plenty of time to start experimenting with different recipes, have fun and I hope you find something that works.
