Milk Donation

I exclusively breastfeed my nearly 4 month old daughter but I also work full time, so I pump at work to keep up my supply. She is reverse cycling and only takes 5-7oz during the day while I'm gone but I pump anywhere from 12-18oz a day! I will never be able to use this milk and I hate the thought of it going to waste. Does anyone know about any milk donation services in this area? If you are familiar with the process, how does it work? I'm aware of Milkshare but I have heard it's incredibly hard to be "accepted" into the program and if you take even Tylenol your milk will be denied. Is that true? Could I contact the hospital I delivered in (St. John's Main) to get more information or will they be just as clueless as I am? Thank you!

EDIT: I should also mention that I have nearly 150oz in my freezer as a "backup" stash already, and I keep about 50 in the fridge as well. So that's about 200oz I have on hand at all times. I could definitely stand to give away some of it!

So What Happened?

I contacted a few people and my milk will most likely be donated to a friend's adoptive baby. It's something that never occured to me but when I started getting responses from you guys it reminded me. So in a way, you all did help! Thanks!

If you can't donate it, freeze it. Her intake will increase as she gets older and if you freeze it you will have a supply for a long time.

I donated 100 oz. of my extra frozen breastmilk to the Bronson Mothers' Milk Bank in Kalamazoo.
They sent me a bunch of info. and paperwork, I filled it out and had some blood drawn and they accepted all 100 oz.
Unfortunately, my supply started to slow down when my son started eating solids and I wasn't able to continue to donate. It's still nice to know that my milk helped feed sick babies!

Here's a website & phone ####-###-####. I believe the women who runs it is Cindy Duff.

I was in the same situation a few years ago with my daughter. I had such a large amount of milk in the freezer and my fridge was full and my daughter was still getting plenty. So I called the laleache league and asked what to do. I thought about donating mine, I never take any medications. But they said that when you donate it, it then gets pasterized(sp?) and many of the nutrients are removed. From what they told me it seems to be a pain to do. My lactation consultant told me to get a deep freezer because the milk will last up to a year in it!! So I did that and I did eventually go through most of it. You can also use some to make puddings and hot cereals for your baby with it. Good luck, I hope you find answers easier than I did when I was looking.

I believe Beaumont Hospital has its own donor bank. I would contact their breastfeeding support line (you can find it on their website) for information.

Dear D.

You have golden treasure and I think it will help premature babies a lot. I know Beaumont takes milk donation. The procedure I am not sure.

What a wonderful idea! You might contact La Leche League in your area. Maybe there is someone that needs to suppliment their own milk?

I had extra and donated it to a friend who wasn't producing enough milk.. she was grateful.

Or maybe someone that's adopted a baby?
