Milk Allergy and First Birthday Cake
I am trying to plan my daughter's first birthday party. She has a milk allergy, so I don't know what to do for her cake. Does anyone else have a child with a milk allergy? What did you do for his/her first birthday cake? Sophie gets sick 2-3 hours after having anything w/ cow's milk in it. I know most children grow out of this, but I'm not taking my chances on her 1st Birthday. Can you substitute soy milk because she is on soy formula and is fine with that? If she can't have cake, do you have any ideas on what else would be a fun first birthday dessert for her. Thanks for your help!

My daughter is also allergic to cow's milk, and I found a good cookbook at the library "What's to eat : the milk-free, egg-free, nut-free food allergy cookbook" by Linda Marienhoff Coss. It has recipes for vanilla and chocolate cakes as well as for frostings. You can substitute soy or rice milk in recipes, but I was told by an allergist not to use goat's milk because their proteins are very similar to cow's milk. Also avoid cool whip because casein is a milk derivative. There are a few margarines out there that are milk free as well. I use Fleischmann's UNSALTED (salted contains milk). Hope this helps!

My daughter has a sensitivity to cow's milk (which she's slowly outgrowing) and a egg allergy/sensitivity (which isn't going away at all as of yet). We bought cupcakes from Whole Foods for her birthday, as well as the vegan cake (which I must say is FANTASTIC!) They were a little on the expensive side, but so worth it. When I make foods for her now that usually call for cow's milk, I substitute either goat's milk (which I also buy at Whole Foods), or I'll use a dairy substitute like Rice Dream or Soy Dream.

My girlfriend's son is allergic to everything, mile, eggs peanuts all other tree nuts, fish etc. She uses cherrybrook kitchens cake mix and pillsbury frosting. I believe that is the right frosting, the ones with fun fetti on them. He has never had any problems with the cakes or their very yummy cookies. There are allergy websites out there to help you with products that are safe. Fruit sorbet is always good too.
The cakes are available online or at whole foods.

I don't know anything about milk allergies or alternative recipies, sorry. But, in terms of an alternative cake idea, if you don't come up with anything better you could make a JELLO "cake" with Cool Whip (which is dairy free) on top as the icing. Then color the Cool Whip with food coloring to decorate it with your special touch! Good luck and enjoy!

If you are near the Lehigh Valley, Vegan Treats (www.vegantreats.com) has delicious vegan (no milk, no egg) cakes, My sister and brother-in-law are vegan, and we always get a cake or pie from Vegan Treats for birthdays and holidays. They are so delicious. Very, very sweet, though. Everything we've tried from them is great.

I know of a company called Cherrybrook Kitchen that sells dairy free, peanut free, egg free, nut free and some gluten free mixes -cakes, cookies, brownies, pancakes, frosting. I had one of their cakes before and I thought it was good. I found some of their products at my local Giant Eagle store. You can also order online at http://www.cherrybrookkitchen.com/ At the bottom of the home page is a store locator link. You can use it to find stores in your area that carry their products.

My daughter is lactose intolerant & for her birthday I made an angel food cake. We bought some little plastic Dora figures & put that on her cake. I also had some strawberries, peaches & cool whip for the adults to put on the cake if they wished.
Good Luck!!!!

Hi, M.!
My child does not have milk allergies, but I am a pastry chef and I work at Whole Foods Market seasonally and we have a great vegan cake. It's completely dairy free. Our vanilla is not that great, but the chocolate is really very good and moist. We also have a dairy free icing. I am a stay at home mom for the most part and am baking out of my home. If you'd like to order a cake through me, I'd be happy to make one for you. Just let me know if you want to know about prices.
I'm currently planning my baby boy's 1st birthday party too!
Good Luck!
