Military Family New to the Area

Hello! We just moved to the area 2 weeks ago. My husband is active duty Air Force working at the Guard Bureau at Andrews. We just moved here from Denver, Colorado, but we both call Tennessee home. I'm looking for mom's/other families that share the same interests as our family, have children around the same age, and can help me get used to being in a new area and help me find what there is to do around here. Before we moved, I enjoyed taking my daughter to weekly story time at the local library, going to the park, (when it's warm), and any other activities to get her out of the house. Information about my family posted below! Can't wait to hear from some people!

Welcome to Andrews hun. We too just got to Andrews. We are Navy so it s a bit of a pain to find others that know what it is like with kids. I have a 4(boy)3(girl) and 17 months(girl). I am too a SAHM and I know that it is tough getting to meet others.
My husband is an AO. It is hard to find wives/husbands that share the same interests.

Welcome to Andrews! Do you live on base? I have been on this base for about 2.5 yrs. I have a daughter that will be three in April. I do have a couple friends who have older children and we are always happy to see a new face. The Infants and Toddlers program is for ages 6wks to three. There are local libraries that do story time. I have gone a couple times. Most mom's on the base just do their own little play group. There are also parks all over the base. During the summer, everyone is at the park. If you have any questions or wanna meet up to hang out just let me know!

Hi J.,

Welcome to Maryland! If your husband works at Andrews you live nowhere me, (I live in ROckville, MD..Montgomery County), but I wanted to say hi anyway.

If you go online and do a search for your counties libraries you should be able to find story times and things like that. I have two year old twins and I know it can be a challenge to find things to do with them.

Hi. I have a 4 year old and we are always up for playing at the park when it warms up. We are in the Midlothian area...not sure where you all are. I also know that there is a group for moms that have just relocated to the area...I am a Realtor and I know I have stumbled upon that info for my clients but cannot put my hands on it now. If I find the site I will pass it along.

Hi J.,

You can also find playgroups/moms/parent groups at:www.meetup.com

Just enter your town name and search your area and it will bring up everything closest to you.

If you cannot find one near you, you can also start your own group on this site. There is a monthly fee $12/mo but which you can share with the other members. If your groups doesn't work out, after 3 months you get your money back.

I started a group here in Winchester and it hasn't been a year yet and we're at 102 members and I've met some great women/moms.

Hi there!I'm A., I'm 22. My husband is 23, in the Air National Guard on active orders. We are currently in Newport News (he's at Langley) but just found out this week that he will be transferring to the DC Guard so we'll be moving much closer to that area very soon! He starts there Feb. 18th and we just have to sell our condo in Newport News! We are expecting our first child, a girl, May 30th. Are you living in the DC area or outside of it? We are looking as far as Fredericksburg bc that's where our parents are but maybe as close as Woodbridge? I'm not really familiar with the area and we've only known for 2 days so it's all pretty new, who knows!

Hi J.,

I'm not really sure where Andrews AFB is, but my husband is stationed in Norfolk, VA with the Navy. We live in Chesapeake. I would suggest that you look to see if there is a MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) group in your area. The one I attend meets twice a month at a local church. The kids go in the nursery for a couple hours and the moms get a chance to visit with other grownups. Although the group only meets for a few hours a month, it gives Moms a chance to meet one another and share about the resources for families in the area.

I am not sure where that base is, but we are in military housing off of Terminal. I have been here about 2 years, and am searching for more sahm's that are more like me. I moved here from San Diego where I had met the most wonderful Marine Wives, and then we moved here. I just haven't found a friend "like" me. I have 2 little ones. I would love to get together..

I don't know where you live exactly, but there is a La Leche mtg. tomorrow, Friday, at the Kingstone Library. It starts at 10:30AM. You're more than welcome to come and bring the little one - there are lots of nursing moms, pregnant moms, and little ones running around.
Best of Luck,

Hello,

Welcome to the area. The International Moms Club has chapters all over the place. If you go to their website, www.momsclub.org, you can put in your zip code or address and find a chapter near you. The club meets once a month but throughout the month they have many outings for children of different ages, including swimming, gymnastics, crafts, and going to various local playgrounds. They also organize playgroups. I was a member for about 2 years and found it tremendously helpful.

Hi J.,
My name is V. and I live in Clinton which is about 10 minutes from Andrews AFB. I have a 5 year old daughter who would love to have a new friend. I currently run a family childcare and home school both of my children. There is a local library in Clinton that holds story time every Tuesday and Thursday. We have a wonderful park (Cosca) in Clinton where most moms and daycares take the children when it is warm. Also there is the Clearwater Nature Center where you can sign her up for Preschool nature classes. Its rather inexpensive, but loads of fun and also very educational. I will send you a private message with my telephone number. Take care and God Bless. Oh Welcome to the area.

J.,

You may have had a lot of responses to your email.

My husband and I currently live in Centreville (Little Rocky Run) and have been in the area for 2 years. He is with the Marshal Service, and we call Montgomery, AL home.

We have a 2 month old son, but I am currently working full-time. I am happy to email with you/talk with you/meet with you to try and help you get adjusted.

The most helpful thing my husband and I did was start going to Fair Oaks Church off West Ox Road in Fairfax. We have made many wonderful friends.

You probably have more experience moving around than we do. This is our first big move away from home, and we plan on it being our last. (:

Email me if you would like to communicate, ____@____.com. I can also answer any questions about the best places to do things, buy things, doctor recommendations, etc.

Best wishes for settling in your new home,

W. Garner

Welcome! I don't know where you are living, but I am in a similar situation. We just moved here last May from Oregon. My husband is active duty Army NG. My son will be 4 in May and my daughter will be 2 in April. I would love to meet up if we are close. I am in Alexandria, VA. There are also other mother groups through MOMS club international (you just put in your location and it will give you info to the one closest to you). www.momsclub.org They have lots of fun things to do for the kids and it is only $25 a year. Feel free to respond if you want to try and get together sometime.

Try looking for a MOMS Club in your area. I always recommend this as we have been very happy with ours. It has given us a chance to meet many other moms/kids and there have been times the families have gotten together as well so dads can be involved. Look for a chapter in your area by going to: www.momsclub.org. Good luck!

Thank you for your service to the country!
