My daughter is almost 6 and a half months old and not sitting unsupported. She will sit unsupported sometimes for a few seconds and then topple over. I don't know whether I am just being paranoid. Please help.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded. She started sitting a week after I posted this. She was a week short of 7 months. Thanks again.

Each child is different, and hits the mildstones at different times. my first son crawled than sat up and my youngest is the same he is 7 mon and not sitting up but doing the army crawl, his twin brother is sitting at 6 m and hardly crawling but likes to roll to get where he wants or demands to be picked up. she will get it just keep helping her sit up to work on those stomach musles

My son wasnt sitting unsupported and he was 7 months...I was scared too. I did all the tummy time and sat him in my lap but he just would fall. Out of nowhere at 7 mths 1 week he learned how to crawl and a week later he was sitting on his own..FINALLY. So he crawled first, then sat up later on. Each kid is different, don't stress..I do understand it is so much easier when they can support themselves. Good luck

I wouldn't worry about it unless your pediatrician is concerned. Both my girls were late sitters (7-8 months) and crawlers, but they both walked at around 12-13 months and are now thriving, athletic preschoolers who are way too smart for me at times! I would just encourage sitting up by playing with her in that position and letting her sit supported by a boppy or Bumbo seat so that she gets used to using those muscles. Good luck!

My granddaughter is the same age, and is sitting up for 10--15 minutes before toppling over. But I'm sure your doc will tell you that it is an individual development; you don't have to worry. If she's beginning for a few seconds, she'll continue to progress.
Congratulations on her, and good luck to you!

Hello! I have a 2 yr old boy and I do believe he started sitting up unsupported around 6-7 months. I read somewhere that babies should be able to sit unsupported by the end of the sixth month. I would definately not worry though- every baby develops at their own pace. I also have an almost 6 month old boy who is doing the same- sitting unassisted for a few seconds and then topples over. Do you have a Boppy? Those are very useful for supporting babies who are almost ready to sit up by themselves. Good luck to you!

Do not worry. Every kid develops differently. My son didn't sit up until 7 months completely unsupported. At 6 he could sit for just a few seconds without falling over. Keep working with him. :)

I think your child is fine. If you are taking her to her wellcare visits I'm sure you are discussing how she is developing with your doctor. He will let you know if she is too behind in developing milestones. Every child is different. Do not compare your children to others, it will drive you crazy. I have 4 kids and they were each different. Relax and enjoy your child.

Wouldn't worry for another month at least. You can help developing her core muscles by having her lay on her back and having her grab your thumbs (the rest of your fingers hold her wrists) and pulling her up into seating position. Then have her sit while holding on to your thumbs. She'll get to seating on her own soon!

I agree with all the mommies who say not to worry yet. My older daughter didn't roll over until the same week she crawled (7 months or so), but she walked the same weekend she turned one. Iknow that I was approaching age 2 before I walked, but I "wasborn talking" according to my mother. Each kid has his/her own strengths. It is so exciting to see what each will have. Enjoy your little girl and try not to worry. Someday soon you'll think "I can't believe I was worried about that."

My son did not sit until he was 8 months. One day he cuold not and the next he sat for 45 minutes. He had some gross motor delays and did everything on the later side (crawled at 10 mos., and walked at 19).

I know how you feel. You can work on sitting her up and putting things between her legs to interest her. Our PT told us to put a tray or desk like piece in front of him so that he could work on it and it would support him. My husband cut one out of a box.

But in the end, I say, Don't stress...she will be able to sit soon and then crawl and walk.

It seemed like my oldest son did things so much earlier than my younger 2. My daughter did not sit well at all until she was that age or older. I started to think her head was too heavy! I'm sure she is fine. My younger son seemed to be a late bloomer as well.

Please don't stress about hitting the milestones at the "exact" age that the books say are normal. Every single child develops at their own pace. I have 4 boys... each one of my children (even my twins, individually) hit their milestones at their pace, and their own pace only. My youngest son didn't crawl until one week before his first birthday. He didn't walk until he was almost 18 months old. My mother kept making comments "What does his Dr. say??" and I had to keep responding, "The Dr. says he's fine, mom!" LOL! Just relax, and enjoy your precious daughter. =)

put her in the walker, this will help her learn how to sit up on her own. Trust me, it will work.

I agree with the others that each child develops at their own rate and you should not be worried yet. However if she continues to not sit up for another month or two or is slow in other areas you can have her tested at Early Intervention Services. My daughter did not start rolling over until 6 months and was very delayed in other areas when she was younger. I had her assessed at 9 months. She did receive services and now at the age of 27 months she has blown past all the milestones for her age and is no longer receiving services.

See if you can find a used bumbo seat, once they can sit alone it's hard to keep them in it. It costs about $40 retail at target but it help build core strength and sits them up at the same time. don't stress and best of luck

My experience is that most sit up on their own between 6 and 8 months. You will notice some improvement every week. Unless you have any other reasons to be concerned about your baby's development, I would not worry at this point.

My son was late for every developmental stage. Don't worry about it. Every baby develops at his/her own pace. Just remember that the 'milestones' you read or hear about are very general guidelines. The fact that your daughter is sitting unassisted by herself for a few seconds is great. It won't be long and she'll be sitting by herself.

if she can do it for a few seconds, she's getting there. do you have a boppy? have her sit in it with it around her waist, and put toys for her to reach out to just beyond her reach so she can practice reaching and balancing.

don't worry, she'll get it! every baby is different, so if she's not sitting up it's probably because she's focusing on other tasks now, and she'll be talking early, or crawling sooner, or something else.

I would not worry yet.
She probably is not ready to sit without support.
It will happen soon.
Is she turning over by herself....creeping on her tummy etc.?
If so, don't worry.
I used to sit my daughter up with pillows all around her and a pan of toys for her to play with, and that helped her get stronger.

Both of my kids (now 9 and 3) didn't sit unsupported till 7-7 1/2 months. I propped them all the time and let them gain strength. Sit back, relax and enjoy her. Once she sits up, crawling is next (if she does that, some babies don't) and then once she's walking..it's full speed ahead, LOL!
