Middle Schools

I'm moving to Austin late October and it is really important that I find an apartment or house in an area that has a great middle school. Not only do I want a good academic program but I'd also like to know about schools where the kids aren't out of control and they have some respect for others. My daughter is coming out of a school that has kids who are disrespectful, "ghetto" and bullyish. They also are very sexual for 12 year olds! I'm shocked by some of the things I see and hear and I am not a prudish person. I'd also love a school that values the arts especially performing arts if possible.

Any recommendations would be appreciated! Thanks!!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for everyone's advice! I was able to check out some great middle schools and found a gorgeous apartment of 620 and 2222 that feeds into Leander school district, namely Canyon Ridge Middle School. We checked out the school and it looks fantastic. Thanks for all the suggestions. I can't wait to move back to Austin!

Perfect timing.
LAMAR Middle school on Burnet Road is about to propose that it be a performing Arts Magnet school. It feeds into McCallum High School which is the Districts Performing Arts Academy. LAMAR has always had excellent Fine Arts instructors and the neighborhood is very diverse and colorful. The Academics are also excellent.

LAMAR is one of the only National Blue Ribbon Middle Schools in Austin. Also this year they are devoting much of their time to making middle school a place to learn respect and personal responsibility.

The school also has excellent honors classes. The PTA is extremely active and this is good, cause it means the parents are very active and involved inside the school.

Our daughter attended LAMAR and graduated from McCallum High School. She is a National Merit Scholar, applied and was accepted to 9 colleges and is now a double major in her sophomore year of college.

I am still very involved in LAMAR's volunteer activities. My nephew went through LAMAR and is now at McCallum and my niece is now in 6th grade there. All of them were accepted to other magnet programs in the district, but decided to attend their neighborhood school, LAMAR.

Let me know if you want more info. about the middle schools in Austin. I am a native Austinite and we are fortunate to have many many great middle schools around the district.

Park Crest Middle School, Pflugerville, Tx was great. The vice-principle, and the teachers cared and were in contact with me. Of course I stayed in contact with them too. I've heard that K. Lane was good too. I think every school though will its issues. Depending on where you live you could go to 2 different high schools. We go to Hendrickson, not Pflugerville.

Hi K.,

My husband works at an excellent middle school - Westridge Middle School in the Eanes school district. Our son attends Kealing Middle School in the Math and Science magnet program.
It has been stimulating and challenging - he loves it! Our daughter went there 10 years ago and is doing well in the Fine Arts Dept. at UT Austin now.

You and your daughter have some great choices in Austin. Some of my son's friends attend O. Henry Middle School and seem happy there.
I'm glad to hear about Lamar Middle School's new program. Two of my son's friends go there. (Hi Laurie!)

Good Luck K. and Welcome to Austin-you'll love it here!

Best Wishes!
D.

I'd also recommend Cedar Park area. Or there are some apartments at 2222 and 620 or on 620 in Austin that are in some good areas. Riverlodge Apartments, Escalon Apartments, The Veranda Apartments and many others.
