Medications Safe During Pregnancy

I am 31 weeks pregnant and have been suffering for 2 weeks! I am tired of having mucus in my throat, a dry cough, a sore throat, headache and stuffy nose. My Dr told me to try allergy meds to see if it was allergies. I tried Alavert and Claritin but didn't touch it. I also tried Tylenol Cold Multi Symptom and it didn't help. His MA mentioned that I might be able to take Mucinex but never found out for me. I put in a call but it takes them a while to call back if it's not an emeregency. Any other ideas?

What can I do next?

Try using 1 teaspoon of salt per glass of warm water to gargle 30 seconds, several times a day to help reduce swelling. Also use a saline nose spray. Drink lots of water a, drink hot tea with lemon and honey, keep a pot of boiling water with salt in it to fill you kitchen with steam. Hope this helps!

I second C.T.'s answer. If the doctor isn't being speedy about calling you back then call your pharmacist and check with them as to what you can take.

Hi H.,

So sorry you are not feeling well during your pregnancy. I still have my list of approved meds from my doctor and this is what it says under allergies:

chlortrimeton
sudafed
benadryl
atarax
claritin or claritin d
zyrtec

Hope this helps...best wishes!

When I was pregnant I took Mucinex and regular Sudafed......both recommended by my doctor.

I always call a pharmacist when I have a question about what you can take when pregnant and drug interactions.

Ask your pharmacist which are safe during pregnancy - they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Benadryl is certainly safe during pregnancy, and it's the active ingredient in Tylenol PM/Advil PM to help you sleep. Since you're having issues with headaches, I'd say to try that.

Are you sure it's allergies, though, instead of a sinus infection? Do you have any green drainage?

I'd simply ask your pharmacist for recommendations both OTC and Rx and then call your OB's office back and ask which they'd recommend of those provided.

What a mess - sorry you're dealing with this - no fun!

I am in your boat, but am at 38.5 weeks and having a c-section in 3 days. I do NOT want this cough after a c-section!! I started with Zyrtec, then Claritin, and now am trying Alavert. He was supposed to see if it was working well enough yesterday, but was in surgery during my appointment. I won't see him till the day before my c-section!! Anyway. I did find that I had to take something for at least 3 days before I started noticing any difference. Have you taken any of them very long? The nurse had also mentioned trying Benedryl, but I think I will give the Alavert another few days since I am so close, and I added the BreatheRight strips just so I could sleep at night. I had been told that Mucinex isn't safe during pregnancy, so have never tried that (you can also call the pharmacy, who should have the same book of safe drugs to get a quicker answer). For the headache, you may be dehydrated on top of everything else, so try to increase your fluid intake, or try something like gatorade.

Another vote for call your pharmacist. I actually double check all drugs with the pharmacist, even for breastfeeding questions too. In my experience they are more knowledgeable about the drug safety questions. And from what I can tell, the doctors office just looks at the computer system that seems the same as the pharmacist's.
