Medication - Carol Stream,IL

I have to start an antibiotic and can't have ANY alcohol in my system what's so ever. I went to a birthday party last night and had a few drinks. Do you think it's safe to start it tomorrow night? When does alcohol leave your system? Thanks so much!!

What can I do next?

You should be fine. The alcohol would make the antibiotic not work.... also if you are on the pill the antibiotic can make that not work too.

The general rule is that your liver can oxidize 1 drink per hour. You should be fine.

Yes. It's out of your system within a few hours.

A typical drink is 12 ounces of beer, 4 ounces of wine, or a shot or once ounce of hard liquor. For each drink you should allow 2 hours for it to break down the alcohol. If you have any other underlying problems such as thyroid, liver, or kidney, high blood pressure or diabetes it could take a little longer so if you had 3 drinks wait 8 hours and you could safely take the antibiotic. Make sure you take it at appropriate intervals according to the presciptive directions and drink plenty of water and finish the prescription. I always get a kick out of people who say I had some leftover antibiotics so I started those but I still feel bad. They can cause more super bugs that can't be killed by any antibiotics. Hope you feel well.
