Medicare/Medicaid Information Needed

My husband is losing his job with amazing benefits because he has to intern for his college degree. He was hoping the job would be able to work with him for only a couple of months, but they won't so...

We are needing medical insurance for the family. I believe we would definately qualify, seeing as how we are both college students with a child.

I go to the Medicaid website, and it is a flood of information. Can someone give me a little breakdown so I will understand better?

What can I do next?

Hey I understand, I had to do the same thing. It was the best thing I could have done for my kids. Our income allowed us to get medicaid. This is what you want to sign up for. Of course, I forgot what the income limit is. I think you have to make under 30,000 or less with a family of at least four. Make sure you read that, most importantly. And then, there is always Chips, 1-877-543-7669, this is for low income families too, but you still have to pay so much. Medicaid pays for everything though i recommend you try them first. You can apply online for medicaid, and or get an application online for Chips.

Hope that this helps.

Medicaid is the state funded medical insurance for low income
families needing dr for little ones.
Medicare is the one for elderly consumers.
Don't forget about wic...it helps with food for those under 5...milk, cereal, oj, cheese, peanutbutter.

Hi Lisa - you will want Medicaid as Medicare is for Senior Citizens. :) What I just did was I called the main number off the website and they took a whole bunch of info like if I knew what doctors I wanted (obviously I had to make sure the accepted medicaid first) and so one. Then cause it was hard for me to get out to get and app they mailed one to me but you can go and pick one up if you would like as well. As soon as I got it I filled it out and then dropped it off myself at the office instead of mailing it back so it would go through quicker. When you do that also ask for a reciept that you gave it to them so they can't say they never recieved it. To make it go faster as well bring a copy of your ID and an ID for everyone you are applying for (shot record works for kiddos too), a letter or something from your husbands work and intern place showing that he is no longer recieving a paycheck as you need proof of income, a copy of a bill with the correct name/address on it, and if any of you were not born in TX they need a copy of your birth cert. You can either have an appt at the place or on the phone. It is harder to get medicaid for adults but since he is unemployed now you should be fine I would think. Also FYI - If you are on Medicaid you automatically qualify for WIC - or if you are not breastfeeding at least your son will. If you are on medicaid you just show them the card and you dont have to show any proof of income like usual. TXU can also submit a low income form for you if you are on medicaid that will save you about 10% on your bill plus no late fees. Under the circumstances you also might be able to qualify for food stamps and it is all on the same app if you want to apply for those as well. If so A. Food Ministries that you told me about do take food stamps as my sister in law has been able to use them with them. It takes AT LEAST a month or 2 to have it all go through and when they send you something and say they need it back asap they are not kidding as they are quick to cancel if you dont send it right back making you qualify all over again! :) Good luck!

Medicare is for individuals with special needs/disabilities and for elderly individuals. Medicaid is for people who meet a certain income requirement. Definitly look into getting Medicaid.

Hi,

To start if he works for a Company now, that has more than (I think) 25 employees, they HAVE to offer you COBRA benefits. Continuing coverage. However they don't have to pay any part of the insurance any more. It will be expensive, and most can’t afford it.

The difference between Medicare and Medicaid. Medicare is for primarily over 65, but disabled person can get it also. Medicaid is for income challenged. You don't want to go till your income has dropped. Otherwise they will just tell you don’t qualify, and you will have to go back another day. They look at the month. So, if your husband has already received his last pay check before 3-1-07, then go now. But if he has income for March, you will probably need to wait. Take everything that you can imagine with you. All your bills, and expenses. Including any child care, if you help any elderly or needy in your family. Phone, lease, insurance, electric, water, medical expenses, ect. Birth certificates for the kids, and SS cards. You can go and wait if you need emergency food stamps. However, most turn in their paperwork and pray for a early morning appt, but plan on being there for hours. They work in the emergency cases through out the day.

If you don’t get Medicaid, you can ask your school if they have a student policy,. If it is a group policy, you can get any preexisting condition covered, if you don’t have more than a 30 day lapse in coverage.

If that doesn’t work call Al Boenker Insurance and ask for the health dept. I used to work their. They can tell you all your options.

You might look at Fortis, they have a short tem policy, but Major Medical only.

Good Luck,

P.
