Medical Transcriptionist Out There?

I took Medical Transcribing and finished about eight or nine years ago. I worked in a transcription office for about one year, and submitted my resume to the Sheriff's office in my city to work in the medical records division, and did not get that job. But, I got a job with the Sheriff's Office not in that field and about five years later an opening became available in the Homicide Division for a transcriber to take victim and suspect statements and I was blessed enough to be chosen for the job and I'm loving it. Although, it seldom involves using medical terminology, but, every now and then something comes up dealing with my training. But, to sum it all up, everything I know and use came from my classes in the Medical Transcription program.

Never done it personally, but my cousin used to do this from home for an office with several doctors. I used to see one of the doctors and at the end of the visit he would mumble into his little pocket recorder and I had no clue what he said. I asked her about it one day and she said you get used to it. Best thing is to try to stick to a doctor so you can understand him.

When you start going through the medical book, remember the definitions and the parts of body are within the word. Make recipe cards for words you do not understand to help you rember them faster. Kind of on the flash card theory. I also had a tape recorder and asked the teach if I could taper. Then you do not forget any part I had a very good teacher and helped me alot. and used a work book series called the Language of Medicine. It has every thing.

I have been told that the medical field is soon going to do away with transcriptionists. Most facilities and Physicians are doing it electronically.
