Was wondering if anyone does medical coding from home? I've thought about getting the training for coding, and would love to work from home. Thank you.

All of our coders work from our office. Because you work with patient charts I can't imagine any firm letting you do it from home especially as a new hire.

with the changing of technology as well as the HIPPA laws - I'm not sure you can do medical billing from home anymore...

before you put out the money for the training - check to see how many offices are actually using medical coders outside of the office...

GOOD LUCK!!!

My neighbor works a large hospital, for her first year she had to work in house. They have since let her work at home 2-3days out of the week. So it is possible, but really don't know how many small private offices would allow it. I wouldn't bank on it, but just wanted to let you know that it is possible!

My cousin checked into those courses that offer a certificate for medical billing. it was very expensive AND there were so many people that have done it that there isn't that many jobs available. I wouldn't even consider it unless you personally have a contact that will for sure hire you after you complete it. Good luck!

None of the hospitals in the network or physicians complexes I have worked for have medical coders or billers who work from home. Many are subcontracted through outside companies and use the computers and office space at the facilities or physician's offices and their salaries, insurance, etc are paid by the other companies.
I'm not saying it's not possible there are positions like that available for working at home, but none of the health care providers in my area operate that way. That's why I'm always skeptical about employment ads for such positions or ads saying they will train you to do it so you can work at home.
That's just been my experience.

Best wishes.

Check with local companies and doctors first, to see if there is a demand. I do some of it from home, some in an office, and I've done it for 15+ years.
