Measuring Large - Matthews,NC
As anyone ever run into this? I am at 22 and a half weeks (ultra sound confirmed) and today my midwife measured uterus...and it measured 28 weeks!! That is a HUGE difference. She said if I measure big like that again, we will do ultrasound at next appt in 4 weeks....but knowing me, I will stay awake nights wondering if I have baby Hewey the Giant Child growing in my belly!!! My midwives are amazing. She measured three times before she mentioned it was on the big side,,so she double, no make that tripple checked. I looked it up online, but can't find anything about it. Maybe my keywords are off? So, thought I would ask the awesome ladies here :-)
So What Happened?™
I have to tell ya'll that I had a miscarriage then was pregnant two weeks later....and had an ultrasound at 6 weeks along, (earlier the ultrasound more right on the due date) so midwives are very sure of due date. One response was that a birth defect could make me measure bigger?? I tried to look that up but can't find anything??? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT????? WHAT BIRTH DEFECTS???????? IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT THAT PERSON IS TALKING ABOUT,,PLEASE WRITE ME BACK. I AM ON THE VERGE OF CALLING MY MIDWIFE AT HOME TO TALK TO HER, I AM SO FREAKED OUT RIGHT NOW. HOW ANYONE CAN PUT THAT OUT THERE AND JUST LEAVE IT IS BEYOND ME.

I was 21 when i got pregnant with my son. I had stretch marks before i was 4 mos pregnant. By 6 mos it looked like i was going to pop and everyone thought i was 9 mos plus! I had only gained 6lbs by the time i was 6 mos pregnant. I had several ultrasounds during my pregnancy, for multiple reasons. However, during the last 3 appts, i had a ultrasound every time. My son was born 2 weeks aearly also. I also measured large. But according to the ultrasound, he was going to be anywhere from 6lbs-13oz to 7lbs-1oz. I had this told to me..and was like ok i am massive, boy am i going ot have alot of work to do after he comes out to lose this weight. Not the case at all. My son weighed 9lbs even and was 22in long, and that was 2 weeks early. I measured big, i was big, and there was nothing worng with my son. Stay calm. Try to relax. Don't look up everything you can on the internet, cos if you do, then you have cancer..or something else thats devistating wrong with you. I have lots of health issues, and looking up symptoms, and clue for a diagnosis, is they wrong thing to do. Call your midwife, thats what she's for. If she doesn't calm your fears, get a second opnion. They really are the best, and i wish i had one with my son. Lots of people measure large, and nothing is wrong. Just try to relax.

Have you considered it could be multiples??? I measured a little larger than what the doctors thought I would and now I have 2 sweet 2 year olds.

If you have had your glucose tests and everything is ok,RELAX. Some couples have large/larger babies. It may be genetics. My Husband weighed 10 lbs 2oz at birth,I weighed 8 lbs 3oz at birth. We were both the "First baby". My first child, a daughter, weighed 9 lbs 15 oz and was 21 1/2 inches long. My second child, a son, was delivered by C-Section two weeks early (due to my blood pressure going up) weighed in at 8 lbs 12 oz. and he was 21 1/2 inches. So don't worry. Enjoy your pregnancy no matter how large you may measure. It's not the size that matters, it's having a HEALTHY baby that matters. Good Luck to you and your family.

I had the same thing going on with my first baby. My midwives started to notice my oversized belly around the 25th week. I had frequent ultrasounds to confirm that I would be able to have natural childbirth. People often commented on my giant bump, "are you having twins?" It really bothered me for the remainder of my pregnancy and for no good reason. My daughter weighed in at a whopping 7 lbs. 4 oz.

I'm sure you have, but have you been checked for diabetes? Babies tend to run bigger to diabetic mothers. I'm one of them. My baby was running about 4 weeks ahead sometimes, and 2 weeks other times (I had ultrasounds every week during the last 3 months). The best bet is to watch by ultrasound. They were estimating her to be under 9 lbs, but she ended up being 9 lbs. 11 oz. - I hope this is not the case! Good luck!

I measured huge with both my boys too. My first one only measured I think 3 weeks ahead. At my last appt. before i went into labor 3 days later, she said I was measuring ahead, but wasn't real concerned. I asked how big she thought the baby was, and she said somewhere around 7 punds 12 ounces. My little guy was born at 9 pounds 5 ounces....so no wonder I was measuring ahead. The second one was only 8 pounds 6 ounces, but I had a lot of fluid. after my water broke, it was like a straight stream for like 2 hours!! So you could just have a big baby or you could have a lot of fluid. Always trust your maternal instinct! If you don't feel like there is anything wrong, then most likely there isn't. Do you or your husband come from a family of large (tall) people??

J.,
There are many many causes of measuring too big for your due date. It can be just simple extra fluid to something more complex such as a birth defect. I would definitely get an ultrasound as soon as you could to not only alleviate your fears but also to ensure the health of your unborn baby.
