Meal Ideas

Hi. i was wondering if anyone has good ideas for a 12 month old to eat. Lately, it seems all he will eat is goldfish crackers, regular crackers, chicken nuggets and pears, rice & potatoes. Sometimes turkey and grilled cheese depending on his mood. It's hit or miss on vegetables - but he will only eat carrots - and that isn't very much when he does. I feel that I'm going to be starting off really bad eating habits if I continue just giving him the same stuff. Anyone have any meal idea's that I can try to get my child to eat a little more variety?

As I've noticed with my 2 yr old, her taste likes and dislikes vary almost from day to day...she has the staples she loves (grackers, french fries, potatoes, ect) but there are some days she'll only eat one item (all day!)..I used to worry but our pedi said as long as she's gaining weight and is healthy then not to worry. Soon we'll be wondering how she can eat so much and not put on any weight!! LOL :0)

My son is a very picky eater, ... what I did was make dinner/meal time fun for him. I'd make him faces out of his food on his plate and we would laugh about it later. Like when you give him chicken nuggets, use two nuggets for the eyes, corn in a row for teeth, you can do boiled carrots with a little brown sugar for the nose or hair... make it fun. My son likes corn, carrots and brown sugar, chicken nuggets, fish sticks, potatoes, ham, chicken, hot dogs, noodles, ravaolie, ( I spelled that so wrong... ha ha ha ) meat balls, hamburger... you name it and he will pretty much eat it now. At first he wouldn't eat anything except oatmeal. That's it. No baby food... no nothing. Just oatmeal... now he will eat whatever i put on his plate ( unless of course it's just really gross tasting. ) I hope this helps!

Hi,S.

S.,some kids start out with appetites of their and you just have to find ways to fit other foods in that would healthy for them my grandbabies are 3yrs. and 2yrs.old and all they would eat at one time were tomatoes, fruit, cereal at one time I though my oldest was going to be sick but my daugther and I kept expericening with other foods such as macoroni, greens, corn, potatoes.it turned out that they were aquirring their own sometimes mother's can forced foods on their children and their bodies aren'tready for my grand babies now like things like pizza, chicken, hot dogs, fish, pasta and some other foods,But they still don't like cake, ice cream, chacolates, cookies as yet and we don't force it,popsickles at times jello they love you see just as we have aquirred taste so do they allow it to come on it's own as you practice with other foods by small samples your babie taste buds will soon develope in the mean time relax I'm sure you'll be find.

This worked for my grandchildren -- apple slices dipped into peanut butter, peanut butter & banana sandwiches, and carrot & raisin salad (with lo-cal mayo). Peanut butter is a great source of protein. Maybe you can introduce other vegetables (one at a time) with melted cheese on top. Remember 1 year olds aren't big eaters and they will not let themselves starve. They will eat when they are hungry.

Good luck, S.. Enjoy your little guy because they grow up way too fast.

Breakfast food for dinner is good. . .scrambled eggs and french toast. Hardboiled eggs keep in the fridge too. I froze homemade chicken soup in single serve bags for quick lunches. You can hide veggies in spaghetti sauce by cooking and mashing them. Kashi makes crackers my kids will eat but are healthier. My son loved baked sweet potatoes at that age.

I am going through the same thing with my 13 month old daughter. She is still on the bottle and formula because she doesn't seem to want anything else and I am afraid if I don't give her that at least she won't get her nutrients. Something I will talk to her pedi about at her 15 month. My daughter is VERY picky in what she eats and it seems like alot of it has to do with textures and the fact that she has only 2 teeth (the bottom two) which doesn't help either. She will eat yogurt but only if I give her a spoon and she can attempt to feed herself which always turns into a mess. She loves fries as well. Kix is what I give her in the morning. She also loves deli meat such has honey ham that I just break up into pieces. She loves any type of pasta like spaghetti or fettucine. I have given her macaroni and cheese it seems like all week long at times but if that is what she will eat I give it to her. I try to give her other things but they end up on the floor but I am still trying to at least give it to her. I used to stress about it every day and would sometimes even start to cry but I am not going to be concerned unless her pediatrician starts to say something to us. Good Luck!
