Hello Mamas,

My little one has just woke up from a long nap and is now saying in a crying way that her ear hurts. She has been saying this now for an hour and keeps getting more upset. What do you recommend to do? She will be 4 in October and isn't usually a complainer. She hates medicine and when I asked what she wanted me to do, she said put medicine in her ear. Well with her saying that is must hurt bad. What should I do for her?? Can you get an ear infection all of a sudden or it start hurting right away???
Any advise would be helpful. Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I gave her some tylenol and within 45 minutes was back to her normal self. She said her ear doesn't even hurt anymore. So I will monitor it tonight and tomorrow morning and see what happens. Thanks for all the great advice!!

Does she have a history of ear infections? She could definitely have one.
She might have some fluid in it. I would give her something for the pain
and then take her to pediatrician in the am. You might want to prop her up
tonight because laying down will increase the pain.

Get a doc to check it tomorrow, but I know that I've woken up with a *plugged* ear (from sleeping on that side) that can be painful. You can look into her ear with a flashlight and see if it's red and inflamed. Give her some pain meds to help get her more comfortable if it is.

give her a decongestant and a pain killer. Massage from her nose out to her ears, and than from behind her ears down her neck in long strokes to help the tubes drain. If you can get them to drain by following this over the next couple of days you can avoid antibiotics.

yep, that is what my son does when he has one. give her tylenol or med. and take her to dr. tomorrow.... it might have just been building up to that point and then finally got infected and started to hurt.
one more thing there is some drops you can buy at walmart to put in ear for pain.

My son has had that happen twice and both times he ended up having ear infections. Usually he gets ear infections after he's had a cold for a while, but those two times he had no other symptoms, just ear pain and it came on all of a sudden. You can try giving her some Tylenol or Motrin (or the generics) for the pain, but I would definitely make her an appointment with her doc. Good Luck, ear infections are no fun!

If you think it is an ear infection, the best way to find out would be to take her to the doctor in the morning for a sick visit to see if she has one. Tylenol or motrin in the meantime for pain relief. Good luck!

It's very likely an ear infection.

This is exactly what happened at our house on Saturday night. It can happen that quickly. My son went to sleep fine and woke up saying his ear hurt and wanted a bandaid. We had a doctor come to the house and immediately told us it was an ear infection. The doctor gave us amoxicillin and said it was important to give him Motrin for the pain. He started feeling better once the Motrin kicked in and was back to himself by Monday.

Warm olive oil can also help relieve ear pain. If oyu can get your little one to sit still long enough to get it in her ear!

Make her take motrin and go to the doctor in the morning. Its going to be hard getting through this without pain meds. Time to get creative or shes going to be miserable.
