Has anyone heard of this or tried it ? My grandson is in first grade & is having trouble with math. His teacher sugested getting the cd of rap music on adding & subtracting. Does anyone know the actual title ? I found it on Amazon for rap multiplication. My dad always said that if they would put schoolwork to music, kids would learn it quicker.

What can I do next?

This is how I learn everything! (Not necessarily rap, but with music.)

I think it's worth a shot. What's the worse that can happen? You spend a little bit of money, find out it doesn't work, and move on to the next idea?

If it helps, I still remember the bones of the body because I put it to jingle bells. I had just moved to a new school and had 4 days to learn them before the test. It was almost Christmas, so I started singing Jingle Bells while studying. Next thing I knew, I was singing the bones of the body to the tune. Test day came around and I started humming it quietly to myself. I got a 100%.

Good luck!

If you go to rocknlearn.com and click on math, you find the addition and subtraction rap video. There is also an addition and subtraction rock video, you can watch samples of both the rock and the rap. Personally I think the rap seems more current (My seven year old son agrees). Rocknlearn has been around for a long time and their videos are popular.

In my past life, I was a math teacher. This is a good suggestion. Your grandson will think it's fun. There is lots of repetition in many of these songs. The music will help him memorize things. You can do it in the car and the house. He will not think of it as "work" and it's more fun than flash cards, with the same result. The teacher probably suggested the rap version, because kids often think that it's "cooler". Check youtube. You can often find lots of math songs on there too.

I have a graduate degree in cognitive psychology and while it's been a LONG time since I read anything on this... there is a proven tie between math learning and music. Not to mention the motivation factor of making it more fun. Also, some people actually learn better with light distraction like music. So, I definately think it is worth a try. I would love to hear how it works for you, as my oldest has struggled with speed math facts.
