Math Curriculum.

Most of the other HS'ing families I know, use either MUS or Singapore (although we use neither).

There are some great yahoo groups; AHomeschoolReview, & HomeschoolingExtradordinaryKids, are 2 amongst many that have some great curriculum reviews in them. You can also search the groups and come up with some pretty cool finds. There's even an adhd moms homeschooling adhd kids group, and multiple gifted, 2e, or LD homeschooling groups... not to mention all of the general or area specific groups. I think I'm on 6 or 7 HS'ing yahoo boards now, and the wealth of information is priceless. Here are the links to the 2 above that I mentioned:

I am familiar with Math-U-See. My husband and I first saw MUS demonstrated by its developer. I am a very SLOW person when it comes to math, while my husband is a natural and accomplished mathematician. During the demonstration, Jim and I kept turning to each other and saying, "No WAY!!!" Jim said it because he realized this method taught math the way he "got it" in his head and I said it because I was finally "getting it"!

We have been using MUS ever since.

Most of the families in our homeschool support group use Math-U-See. Those children who use it are excelling. I know of two children who used it all the way until eighth grade and they had strong foundations for advanced mathematics and are very well-equipped for any college math or science requirements in the future. (Just so you know, MUS does offer advanced mathematics courses as well.)

I heartily recommend MUS to you for your son.

Houghton Mifflin is used in CA public schools. It is pretty good and has materials available on-line as well.

However, just so you know, the correct grammar is "does WELL in math." Sorry, I am a stickler for correct grammar. I teach math, but my grandmother taught English and Latin.

I am a teacher and we use Houghton Mifflin Math. I am not familiar with homeschooling or speech/comprehension delays but I can tell you it will help prepare him for state testing if you have to do that eventually. (We start testing in grade 2). Good luck!

Hi C., I am a fellow homeschooler to my 2nd grader - I'm always excited to see another mom that educates at home, it's such an awesome family experience! I'm only familiar with MATH U SEE, I saw a demonstration on it at CHEA ( a homeschool convention )
and I am very impressed with the hands on, visual learning... perfect for teaching math, understanding it, and applying it in the ''real world''... Text books only go so far! We are planning to use it in our own curriculum later in the year. Happy Homeschooling, nurturing and teaching!

My daughter is in fifth grade and has Houghton Mifflin. She goes to a private school, but I heard this is the math they use in the Poway School District, which is a top district nationwide. She was used to a different curriculum and is just now starting the Houghton Mifflin curriculum, so it's taking some getting used to, but it looks really good and I think your son will do great starting this in first grade. The teacher told me it's very visual and so your son should do good with that since he has speech delays.

I did Math-U-See with my son. We did the Primer this past year (he is five years old and in kindergarten) and the concepts were laid out in a VERY concrete way. I was very pleased with his progress and with the program. I feel like they have given him a strong foundation, and he now has some exposure to multiplication, solving for an unknown, and can tell time. I plan on continuing and purchasing the Alpha program this year.

I'm homeschooling my first grader. She used Singapore math at her charter in Kindergarten so we kept with that. We both really like it. My neighbor who is an expert, (homeschooling her 6th child) and uses math u see.
