Maternity/Family Photography Ideas Needed :-)

We have scheduled a maternity photo shoot and I need some ideas. We are doing it in studio.

I have looked around and found that a majority of people choose to go the black shirt or white shirt and jeans route. I'm thinking we might do coordinating colors (my husband my son and myself). Or my son in a plaid shirt and my husband in one color from the plaid and myself in the other. Any thoughts, though on cute coordinating clothing ideas? or not even cute but just subtle timeless ideas?

Also looking for poses or inspiration. I really want to keep it light and fun and not too sexy or dramatic. Kind of a sense of humor without being goofy. Clear as mud, right?

You ladies are so creative, though, and I'd love to hear your ideas or see your inspiration photos.

What can I do next?

I've seen the most adorable maternity shots on Pinterest. Go there and use the search box. Some of those pics are breathtaking!

Alt F photographed a bunch of photographer families between Nevada and California.

He was sure to tell me to let everyone pick their own clothes. My 6 year old is in a tutu and ballet slippers, my 28 year old is in a black dress and heels, my husband is in his favorite lightening bolt shirt (Plaaaa!) and I wore jeans and a blouse, no stress. I love love the photo!

I had to pay it forward and photographed the next photographers family and Dad was in Levis and a shirt, Mom in black stretch pants and a sweater, and the son was in shorts and a football jersey, with the two dogs. I framed it and left it at her front door on Christmas morning and she loved it.

Just have fun.

You will want to wear solids. Plaids and busy patterns are distracting.
The best pictures are white and kahki or jeans and white or everyone in the same color top.
YMMV

I think the best maternity photo I have ever seen was where mom was sitting on her knee's and toddler child was reaching out to touching the belly. Both were smiling at each other. It was the cutest thing I have ever seen (sorry dad) lol. In that particular picture both were female so they wore soft pink shirt and white pants. You and hubby could wear dark blue and son wear light blue.

Lately I have seen a lot more of backgrounds coordinating with the room the picture will be displayed in. I was surprised to see that with the background matching the room, it didn't matter what the people were wearing in the pictures. For instance, one of my friends has a living room that is red, gold, black, and white. Her family photos have backgrounds that are either red or a black and white floral. Her kids are wearing yellow and blue plaid shirts, but because of the matching backgrounds, the photos look great together in a group. And yet they are wearing colors that accent their physical coloring.

I saw the cutest pregnancy announcement picture, it was a pic of Mom & Dad's feet wearing flip flops and a pair of baby shoes were in between them. You can do something like that but just add your son's feet in there too.

I know you already have a photographer, but for inspiration-- My friend has a studio is Eagan, and she is great. Here's the link to her biz, Live and Love Sudios.

You and your husband could wear the same color shirt, and have your sobn wear blue, red, or any color that looks good on him. Also think about easy wardrobe changes.
Get pics of them touching your belly. One of my all time favorite pics I had my husband take was supposed to be of my then 2 year old kissing my belly, but he actually was talking to the baby and it's adorable!
I have saw photos where the mom has her hands in the shape of a heart over her belly, or over the ultrasound pic over her belly.
If you know the baby's name, you could get letter blocks to lay on top of your belly while you lay on your back.
You could also have your husband kissing yout bare belly. the options are endless!! Have fun, and congrats!!!
Oh! Just thought one of more.......You could have your son finger paint on your belly, depending on how old he is LOL
