Maternity Coverage - Hoffman Estates,IL

My husband and I are trying to reduce expenses and we are revisiting our health insurance policy. We pay way too much!!! It is a private policy and currently we have maternity coverage on it. We would save significant $$ if we drop that portion of health insurance. My husband is hesitating because what if an ooops???? We do not want anymore, due to the C-sections I've had, age, expenses...etc..We recently donated and/or sold our baby gear since our youngest is 16 months old. Maternity clothes will be donated next. We both work fulltime and our plates are very full. We also take the necessary precautions and have not been careless about protection yes BC.

I've had enough surgeries so I am not open to permanent sterilization...My husband has many reservations about a vasectomy.

What would you do? Suck it up and keep the maternity benefits coverage or drop it to save $$? I am torn.

What can I do next?

Have him get the vasectomy and drop the coverage. My brother in laws have all had them and had no issues. We aren't done having kids yet but that will be what I push to my hubby after we hit baby #4 or 5. I would never suggest tube tying for a woman- - my mom had horrible complications in the years after and ended up with a hysterectomy. Good luck!

If you're not having any more kids, then get permanent birth control and then drop the coverage.

Make your husband go in for the vasectomy already. Men are such babies about that stuff! *eyeroll* It took my DH 3 years after our youngest was born to go get it done! Once he has it done, by all means, drop the coverage. Until then, dooooon't do it. Pregnancy counts as a pre-existing condition for most health insurance policies, so once you're pregnant, it's too late to add that coverage, and you'd be screwed. Both literally and financially. If you don't want any more kids, and don't need the maternity coverage, then it seems like a no brainer. I say suck it up, one of you should get the surgery.

I think if one of you goes for permanent BC then you are good, but not having it could be so costly if you did find yourself pregs. Having prior c-sections you would probably not be a good candidate for home birth which is less expensive so you could end up footing the bill for surgery. I think if you are sure that no more surgery it for you then it would be great if your hubby would get the snip! Mine is going to a few months after we have our third. We researched it and the procedure is not bad and the risk minimal. We are really looking forward to not worrying about it anymore and just raising the kids we have been blessed with! If you guys don't want to go that route though I'd definitely keep the benefits. Good luck!

... do you use birth control?
If not, then an 'ooops' can occur.
Even on birth control, that may still happen.

Unless you are 100% positive you cannot GET pregnant (not just that you don't want to be pregnant), I would keep it. You might be shooting yourself in the foot if you cancel. It would be way costlier on the other end if you did have a surprise baby. On a side note, a coworker who is 42 sold all of her baby items at a garage sale and was done having kids. She now has a six month old boy at home. You never know unless you take surgical measures to prevent it.

One thing to consider if you drop coverage. If you do find yourself pregnant and need to add it you may run into trouble. Some coverage and some states allow pregnancy to be considered a pre-existing condition and they can actually deny you coverage.

I think the only 'suck it up' that should be happening is with your husband. Go get the vasectomy. You've been through the c-sections and surgeries; this MINOR procedure is the least he can do for all of the things you've done.

Once he's been snipped, drop the coverage. Otherwise, continue to hold onto it and pay out the wazoo because he won't get a vasectomy. It is really not a huge deal.

It would be much cheaper to get permanent birth control and drop the coverage than to keep paying for maternity coverage that you do not plan to use.

I'm not sure how an oops would happen if you are actively and accurately trying to prevent one with birth control pills. Even if they 'do' happen once in a blue moon... the chances of that happening to you are pretty dern slim if you take your pill every day!
